Principal Frontend Engineer - Healthtech SaaS

X4 are partnered with a fast-growing digital health organisation to support the hire of a Principal Frontend Engineer. This is an opportunity to join a product and engineering team building modern, compliant, and scalable healthcare software used in regulated environments.

This role is best suited for an engineer who consistently delivers well-structured, production-ready frontend systems with minimal rework in review, and who naturally raises the bar in how frontend applications are designed and delivered.

About the role

You’ll be joining a multi-tenant SaaS platform in the healthtech space, operating in a fast-paced, product-led environment. A key focus of this role is improving engineering efficiency by reducing PR rework, improving frontend architecture consistency, and strengthening overall code quality across the team.

You will have ownership across features and be trusted to drive work from design through to delivery with a high degree of autonomy.

Ideal background

We are ideally looking for engineers who have come from environments such as:

• B2B healthtech or telehealth infrastructure platforms, particularly HIPAA- and SOC2-compliant SaaS
• Multi-tenant or white-label SaaS companies where compliance, reliability, and shared infrastructure are critical
• Small-to-mid-stage startups where engineers own work end-to-end rather than operating in narrow specialisms
• Direct-to-consumer telehealth brands, where teams are exposed to regulatory constraints and fast-moving product development

What you’ll work on

• Build and maintain scalable frontend applications using React and Next.js
• Design clean, maintainable UI architecture with strong separation of concerns
• Contribute to frontend system design and engineering standards
• Work with GraphQL-based data layers (Apollo Client)
• Improve consistency and reduce PR rework across the frontend codebase
• Collaborate closely with engineers to raise overall code quality and design maturity

What we’re looking for

• 8\+ years of professional software engineering experience
• Strong expertise in React and Next.js in production environments
• Proven ability to design and structure frontend applications, not just implement features
• Experience in SaaS, product-led, or platform engineering environments
• Strong communication skills and ability to proactively clarify requirements
• A mindset focused on ownership, clarity, and reducing downstream rework

Nice to have:

• Vue.js experience (one production frontend uses Vue)
• Experience with Apollo Client and GraphQL
• Exposure to Pinia or similar state management patterns
• Background in healthtech, telehealth, or regulated SaaS

• PRs that are well-structured and require only light review
• Minimal architectural rework post-submission
• Strong upfront thinking before implementation begins
• Clear ownership from design through to delivery
• Consistent improvement in frontend engineering standards
