Job Description
We are hiring a Transmission Planning Engineer to bring real utility planning judgment to WireWeather. You already know how to open a base case, run a contingency screen, and defend a rating to a room full of planners. We want that judgment shaping how Dynamic Line Rating (DLR) forecasts get used in the studies that matter: interconnection queues, N-1 contingency analysis, and capacity assessments. This is a hands-on engineering role. You will own the planning side of the product, and provide expertise on what studies we can run, what assumptions are defensible, what reports we produce, and how our outputs hold up to scrutiny from a senior planner or interconnection engineer. You will also be a contributor on our software development team. We are especially interested in planners currently working at utilities and RTO/ISOs,transmission-owning organizations, who want to shape how their industry adopts DLR and related technologies rather than just operate within it.
About Pitch Aeronautics Inc.
Pitch Aeronautics (www.pitchaero.com) is a rapidly growing startup creating game-changing solutions for the utility industry. Pitch has developed a drone to install our line sensor, bird diverters, and other equipment on power lines. Our drone-deployable line sensors wirelessly transmit environmental and line characteristics to an online secure API to help utilities push more power through existing lines, prevent wildfires, and improve grid reliability. At Pitch we’ve fostered a collaborative, fun, “get-stuff-done” working environment. We believe in moving fast and creating products and prototypes rapidly. If you’re looking for a place where you can make a difference on day one, be empowered to achieve, and love working in small teams, we want to meet you!
Description
Responsibilities
--------------------
- Advise how DLR, AAR, CLR, and SLR-bound ratings should be applied inside the power flow and planning practices you already use day to day like AC/DC power flow studies, N-1 (and N-1-1/N-2 where applicable) contingency analysis, and generator interconnection (GI) capacity calculations.
- Review study assumptions, base cases, and contingency results for physical plausibility, drawing on your own experience running these studies at a utility or RTO/ISO.
- Partner with our software engineers to translate your planning expertise into product requirements.
- Represent the planner's point of view when we engage RTO/ISO and utility counterparts including former colleagues and peers you already know in the field.
- Review study reports before they reach a partner utility's planning desk, catching anything that would not survive scrutiny from your own team.
- Help prioritize which standards and processes such as NERC TPL-001, MOD-032, FAC, FERC Order 881 / AAR our product should support next.
Minimum Qualifications
--------------------------
- 3–6 years in transmission planning at a transmission-owning utility, RTO/ISO, or equivalent
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
- Hands-on experience with base case validation, contingency screening (N-1 and beyond), and transmission capacity or rating determination.
- Working knowledge of NERC TPL-001, FAC, and MOD-032 standards.
- Comfortable reviewing and interpreting PSS/E, PowerWorld, PSLF, or similar base cases and study outputs.
- Strong written and verbal communication. You can explain a study result to both an engineer and a non-technical stakeholder.
Desired Qualifications
--------------------------
- Experience with LGIA, cluster studies, system impact studies, or affected-system studies.
- Familiarity with interconnection queue processes at an RTO/ISO or utility.
- Familiarity with FERC Order 881 and Ambient Adjusted Ratings (AAR) implementation, or an active DLR program at your utility.
- Demonstrated software development experience
- Genuine curiosity about how software tools could change day-to-day planning work.
Benefits
------------
- 120 hours of Paid Time-Off
- Health Insurance
- Dental \& Vision Insurance
- Short Term Disability Insurance
- Long Term Disability Insurance
- Health Savings Account (HSA)
- Flexible Spending Account (FSA)
