Job Title: School Counselor

POSITION SUMMARY

The School Counselor provides and promotes a comprehensive, developmental program of guidance and counseling, as outlined by the Oregon Framework, to assist all students in the areas of academic achievement, career decision-making, personal/social growth and community involvement. The School Counselor reports to the School Principal or designee and does not supervise any employees.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The school counselor advocates and supports the academic and personal development of all students through the following components:

1). Guidance Curriculum

Suggested Time Allocation: Elementary: 35%-45%; Middle School: 25%-35%; High School: 15%-25%

  • + Classroom Guidance (Systematic)

+ Small Group Activities/Instruction

+ Parent Education and Support

+ Community Events

+ School Presentations and programs

2). Individual Student Planning

Suggested Time Allocation: Elementary: 5%-10%; Middle School: 15%-25%; High School: 25%-35%

  • + Goal-oriented counseling/planning

+ Transition Planning

+ College and Career Planning

+ Parent/Teacher Conferences

3). Responsive Services

Suggested Time Allocation: Elementary: 30%-40%; Middle School: 30%-40%; High School: 25%-35%

  • + Consultation

+ Individual Counseling

+ Crisis Counseling

+ Social Service Integration/Referral

4). System Support and Integration

Suggested Time Allocation: Elementary: 10%-15%; Middle School: 10%-15%; High School: 10%-15%

  • + School Climate and Enrichment Activities

+ Staff Development and Staff and Community Relations/Outreach

+ Advisory Councils

+ Community Outreach

+ Program Management, Research, and Development using research

+ Professional Association and Development

5). Student Advocacy

Suggested Time Allocation: Student advocacy is an integral part of the content framework and cannot be separated out as a delivery method. Therefore, it does not have a recommended counselor time distribution

  • + Communicate/consult with students, staff and parents about student’s school related needs

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain consistent and predictable attendance to meet the requirements of the position.
  • Participate in various meetings for the purpose of receiving information or sharing information and expertise with students, colleagues and parents/guardians.
  • Confer regularly with immediate supervisor
  • Follow all District policies, work procedures and reasonable requests by proper authority
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience Required

  • Masters in School Counseling
  • Thorough knowledge of the Oregon Framework for Guidance and Counseling and the ASCA National Model.

Skills

  • Maintain integrity of confidential information relating to students, staff, or district patrons
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to speak effectively to large and small groups
  • Excellent human relations skills with the ability to establish good relationships with diverse individuals and groups
  • Proficient in the use of a computer and other Internet based applications, including, but not limited to, email and systems applications

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of age appropriate teaching methods, state curriculum framework, education code

Abilities

  • Ability to develop, organize and manage a school–wide counseling and guidance program
  • Demonstrates command of oral and written English language
  • Ability to work collaboratively and establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers
  • Ability to effectively work and communicate with students, parents, and school personnel from diverse cultures or backgrounds in English, Spanish, or other languages related to the job
  • Ability to work harmoniously with others

Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required

  • Holds an appropriate license from Teacher Standards and Practices Commission in the State of Oregon and the required endorsement.
