Job Description
The primary responsibility of the Welding Mechanic is the laying out, fabricating, assembling, installing and welding piping and piping systems, fixtures, and equipment for steam, hot water, heating, cooling, lubricating, and industrial processing systems. The Mechanic typically reports to the trade Supervisor.

A Day In The Life
- Select type and size of pipe and related materials according to job specifications
- Cut pipe using appropriate tools (i.e., pipe cutters, port-a-band saw, hammer and chisel, cutting torch, pipe cutting machine) and thread pipe, using threading machine
- Assemble and install variety of metal and nonmetal pipe and pipe fittings, including those made of brass, copper, glass and plastic
- Join piping by proper means (i.e., welded, grooved, threaded, soldered, brazed, fused)
- Weld pipes/metals with various techniques (i.e., electric, gas, arc, MIG, TIG)
- Test piping systems for leaks and observe gauges attached to pipes for indication of leaks
- Teach and coach by providing direction to apprentices and helpers to help them work safely, deliver quality, and work productivity
- Secure pipes to structure with clamps, brackets, and hangers, using hand tools
- Weld holding fixtures to structural steel members if necessary
- Determine required equipment and welding method by applying knowledge of metallurgy, geometry, and welding techniques
You Should Have
- Possess knowledge of BOCA and OSHA safety regulations
- Possess knowledge of the properties of various welding rods and fluxes used in welding
- Ability to obtain AWS 6g certification
- Ability to pass ColonialWebb weld test
- Ability to work from drawings, submittals and specifications
- Ability to communicate and deal effectively with teammates in other trades
- Ability to maintain a positive attitude and willing to work in a team environment
- Ability to work independently without direct supervision
