Job Description

Be MOE’s first dedicated

AI Engineer

, and turn AI tools into results that real underwriters, adjusters, and agents rely on. 🛠️🌲

Since 1898, MOE has protected the lives and livelihoods of Northwest homeowners, families, farmers, and business owners. Now we’re putting AI to work for them, and we need someone to make it real.

You won’t build models from scratch. We take a buy-first approach to AI, so you’ll connect vendor platforms and foundation models to our data and core systems, ground them in our documents, test them rigorously, and keep them safe in production. As the in-house bridge between vendor tools and business results, you’ll help MOE build this capability from the ground up.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Connect vendor AI platforms and foundation models (via Azure AI or AWS Bedrock) to MOE’s policy, claims, billing, and agent systems
  • Deliver our first AI use cases, like underwriting submission intake, claims summarization, and assistants for agents and employees
  • Configure vendor tools to fit how MOE actually works, not the other way around
  • Build retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) so AI answers from our underwriting guidelines, policy forms, and claims documents
  • Create evaluation tests for accuracy, consistency, and safety, and work with underwriting and claims experts to define what “right” looks like
  • Build guardrails that protect policyholder data, block off-limits responses, and route uncertain cases to a person
  • Monitor live solutions for quality, speed, and cost, and retest when vendors release new models
  • Translate business problems into practical AI solutions and advise on build, buy, or configure decisions
  • Help shape MOE’s AI governance standards and coach IT colleagues on AI engineering practices

WHAT YOU BRING

  • 4\+ years of software engineering experience, including 1\+ years building applications with large language models or other AI services
  • Strong Python skills and experience with APIs, system integration, and cloud services
  • Hands-on experience with RAG, vector search, and prompt design
  • Experience testing AI outputs for accuracy and safety
  • A clear understanding of AI risks like hallucinations, bias, and data leakage, and how to control them
  • The ability to communicate clearly with both technical and business partners
  • A bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience

BONUS POINTS

  • Insurance or financial services experience, especially in underwriting or claims
  • Experience with Azure AI, AWS Bedrock, or enterprise AI platforms
  • Document processing experience, such as extracting data from PDFs, emails, and forms
  • Experience in a regulated environment with audit and compliance requirements
  • Familiarity with agentic AI frameworks, Guidewire, Duck Creek, or cloud and AI certifications

LOCATION

On-site at our Seattle office, four days a week.
