Job Description
Backend Software Engineer (Python / AWS) — Healthcare SaaS
Location: Euclid, Ohio - hybrid, three days per week in the office and two remote days of your choosing. Office days are for collaboration and knowledge sharing across the team. Expect more onsite time during your first several weeks while you get up to speed on our systems.
Compensation and benefits
: $110,000-$135,000 base, commensurate with experience, plus employer-subsidized health insurance and optional dental, vision, and legal coverage at group rates.
Who we are
General Sleep builds the technology behind home sleep testing and sleep-study operations. Our platform is used daily by sleep labs, physicians, and our operations team to carry studies from a patient's home through scoring, reporting, and billing.
We're expanding our engineering team and looking for a backend developer who wants genuine ownership of a production healthcare platform. This is a hands-on role with real scope: you'll work on systems clinicians depend on, and you'll see the effect of your work quickly. We hire for fundamentals and judgment rather than a checklist of technologies, so you don't need to know every piece of our stack on day one.
What you'll do
- Build and maintain our Python backend API - features, integrations, bug fixes, and the reporting our operations team depends on.
- Work with relational data in a managed cloud database: schema design, migrations, non-trivial queries, and performance.
- Write and improve automated tests, and use them to change a production system with confidence.
- Diagnose real problems in production using logs, metrics, and source code.
- Work on asynchronous and background processing: managed queues, scheduled jobs, and the pipelines that move study data through processing.
- Build internal workflow automation that connects our business systems - support, shipping and logistics, and quality management - using a workflow automation platform and vendor APIs.
- Contribute to ongoing security and compliance maintenance in our AWS environment: dependency and OS-level updates, and remediating findings raised by cloud security scanning and compliance monitoring tools.
- Take ownership of a defined area of the platform, and carry your work through peer code review and our controlled release process. Every change is reviewed and approved by another engineer before it reaches production; you'll both give and receive that review.
Work you could grow into
We don't expect anyone to arrive with experience in all of this. It's here so you know the range of problems available if you want to broaden over time:
- Modernizing scientific and signal-processing code into Python.
- Designing and building a self-contained backend for deployment models where the software runs inside a customer's own environment rather than in our cloud.
- Extending our production cloud infrastructure into additional regions to meet data-residency requirements - infrastructure-as-code, networking, and deployment automation.
- Evaluating and customizing an ERP platform and integrating it with the systems we already run.
- Front-end work on a modern JavaScript single-page application.
What we're looking for
- 5\+ years of professional experience building and supporting production web applications, including a stretch where you personally owned a system that other people depended on.
- Strong Python, including experience with a web or API framework such as Django, Flask, or FastAPI.
- Solid SQL and relational database skills - you can design a table, write a non-trivial query, and reason about a slow one. Experience with a managed cloud database service such as RDS or Cloud SQL is a plus.
- Experience designing and consuming REST APIs, and a working understanding of authentication and authorization.
- Practical experience with automated testing.
- Working familiarity with at least one major cloud platform (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
- The ability to make progress in an unfamiliar codebase using logs, tests, and source rather than waiting for a full explanation.
- A track record on small engineering teams, and comfort creating structure rather than inheriting it. This role carries the autonomy and the breadth that comes with a focused team. You'll write the runbook, the test, or the documentation that doesn't exist yet, decide how something should work, and follow through without a process telling you to. If you've only worked inside established engineering organizations with dedicated specialists for each layer, this will be a significant adjustment.
- Clear written communication and dependable follow-through.
- Security-conscious judgment. Healthcare experience isn't required, but you should already handle sensitive data carefully.
Nice to have
None of the following are required, and we don't expect any one candidate to have more than a few:
- Experience with HIPAA-regulated healthcare systems, or with financial or other security-sensitive environments.
- Familiarity with SOC 2 controls, FDA or ISO 13485 quality systems, secure SDLC practices, vulnerability management, or audit evidence.
- Hands-on depth with a major cloud provider's compute, storage, database, messaging, monitoring, and identity services.
- Infrastructure as code (CloudFormation, Terraform, CDK, or similar) and CI/CD pipelines.
- MySQL or PostgreSQL.
- Modern JavaScript front-end development with a framework such as Vue or React.
- Workflow automation platforms such as n8n, Zapier, or Make, and integrating third-party SaaS APIs.
- MATLAB, NumPy/SciPy, or other scientific-computing and signal-processing experience.
- ERP implementation or customization, with a platform such as Odoo or NetSuite.
- .NET or C#.
- Experience evolving and modernizing established production systems.
- Event-driven or message-queue architectures.
- Production incident response and on-call experience.
- Packaging and shipping software that customers install and operate themselves.
- Exposure to medical devices, clinical data, or healthcare integrations (HL7, FHIR).
- Code review, pairing, or mentoring less-experienced engineers.
