Job Description

Paterson \& Cooke South Africa is seeking to appoint an Accountant to join the team in Cape Town.

The Accountant will be responsible for the integrity and accuracy of the company’s financial functions. The role ensures accurate financial transactions, statutory compliance and reliable reporting to support and sustain business performance.

This role is a full-time position with the following tasks and responsibilities:

Tasks:

  • Assist with the monthly accounting adjustments and journals and preparation of month end reports
  • Ensure timely and accurate month-end and year-end financial close out processes
  • Assist with the preparation of all audit schedules, supporting documentation, and adjustment journals
  • Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards, tax legislation, and statutory requirements
  • Maintain audit readiness and ensure financial records meet compliance standards throughout the year
  • Process company payments and manage approved banking functions in line with internal controls
  • Monitor day-to-day cash flow and manage transfers between operational and investment accounts
  • Follow-up on outstanding debtors
  • Review creditor statements and ensure accurate supplier reconciliations
  • Review VantagePoint accounting transactions for completeness and accuracy, including approval of expense claims and purchase orders
  • Process cash receipts
  • Reconciliation of balance sheet accounts
  • Monthly payroll preparation and processing, including salaries, statutory deductions, expense claims, and related submissions
  • EMP501 Reconciliations and IRP5 generation
  • Prepare and submit statutory returns and ensure payment of relevant taxes, VAT returns, and levies to SARS
  • Assist external auditors by preparing and providing supporting financial documentation and schedules
  • Ensure company statutory and compliance documents are accurate and up to date (tax clearance, banking documentation, registrations)
  • Provide firm oversight of company purchase orders for goods and services and, together with other administrative staff, monitor the appropriateness of staff credit spending
  • Provide line management to the accounting administrator
  • Ensure financial tasks are prioritised, deadlines are met, and quality standards are upheld

  • Effective cash-flow monitoring and payment accuracy
  • Effectiveness of financial controls and processes

Minimum Requirements:

  • A BCom Accounting or Finance degree
  • A thorough knowledge of accounting, bookkeeping and generally accepted accounting principles
  • Proven experience in accounting within a professional services or project-based environment. Experience in a global company using multi- currencies will be an added advantage.
  • At least 8-10years’ experience in a similar accounting position.

Competencies:

  • Strong analytical and numerical skills with high attention to detail
  • Advanced MS Office capability, with good experience and knowledge in complex spreadsheets.
  • Experience with an ERP accounting system (Deltek Vantagepoint or similar) and payroll software (Sage)
  • A thorough grounding and understanding of accounting and finance and the interaction of these functions with company performance
  • Experience with cloud collaboration tools (SharePoint)
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills
  • Professional and confident working with senior staff and external parties
