Job Description
The Company
uiAgent is building AI agents that are transforming how CPAs and accounting teams work. We're pre-Series A with significant revenue, strong traction, and the kind of product-market fit that makes investors pay attention. The accounting industry is massive, underserved by technology, and ripe for disruption — and we're already doing it.
Our team is small, sharp, and close-knit. We built this product over 18 months by being relentlessly resourceful, and we're looking for someone who can take our engineering org to the next level.
The Role
We need an Engineering Manager who owns both the technical direction and the people. You'll lead a team of 6–10 engineers building an AI-native platform that handles real financial data at scale — and you'll be deep enough in the architecture to know when a design decision is going to bite us six months from now.
This isn't a role where you sit in meetings and relay updates. You'll set technical strategy, make architecture calls, unblock your team, and when something critical needs to ship, you'll roll up your sleeves and contribute directly. You're the person your engineers go to when they're stuck on a hard problem — and the person the founders trust to translate business priorities into engineering execution.
What You'll Own
- Technical Leadership
— You'll own the architecture and technical direction of our platform. That means making decisions about system design, evaluating build-vs-buy tradeoffs, setting standards for code quality, and ensuring we're building infrastructure that scales with our growth. Our stack spans Node.js microservices, Python-based AI/ML pipelines (LLMs, RAG, multi-agent systems), and AWS infrastructure — you should be comfortable reasoning across all of it.
- Team \& Delivery
— You'll manage a team of 6–10 engineers across backend, AI, and infrastructure. You'll run sprint planning, remove blockers, and own delivery timelines. More importantly, you'll build a culture where talented engineers do their best work — through clear expectations, honest feedback, and real ownership of outcomes.
- Hiring \& Team Building
— We're growing fast. You'll define the hiring bar, design interviews, and make the calls on who joins the team. The engineers you hire in the next year will define our technical culture for years to come. You need to take that seriously.
- Process Without Bureaucracy
— You'll build just enough process to keep a growing team coordinated without slowing anyone down. We're a startup — we value speed, clarity, and shipping over ceremony. You'll find the right balance between moving fast and maintaining quality.
What We're Looking For
- 6\+ years of engineering experience, with 2\+ years managing engineers.
You've built and shipped production systems yourself before moving into management. Your team respects your technical judgment because you've earned it.
- Deep technical fluency.
You can review a system design, spot a scaling bottleneck, and have a productive architecture debate with your senior engineers. You don't need to write code every day, but when you do, it's good.
- Experience with AI/ML in production.
You've managed teams building with LLMs, embeddings, or ML pipelines — not just research or prototypes, but systems serving real users. You understand the unique challenges of shipping AI: non-determinism, evaluation, prompt management, and reliability.
- A track record of building high-performing teams.
You've hired well, grown engineers' careers, managed out underperformers when needed, and built teams that consistently deliver. You know that management is a craft, not a side job.
- Startup DNA.
You thrive in environments where priorities shift, scope is ambiguous, and the right answer is "figure it out." You're energized by ownership, not overwhelmed by it.
- In-person collaboration.
We work together in our Manhattan office. Engineering decisions happen fast here — at a whiteboard, not in a Slack thread three time zones away.
What We Offer
- Substantial equity
— meaningful ownership in a company with real traction and clear upside
- Competitive salary \+ cash bonus
- Flat structure
— you'll work directly with the founders and have real influence on company direction from day one
- Top-tier equipment
— whatever you need to do your best work
- Healthcare, dental, vision, and commuter benefits
- Daily team dinners
and a culture that actually enjoys spending time together
- A great office in Manhattan
with a skyline view
Who We Are
We're a team that takes the work seriously but doesn't take ourselves too seriously. We're direct with each other, we solve hard problems together, and we genuinely like hanging out. If you want to build and lead an engineering team at a company where your decisions have outsized impact — and where the product is already winning in the market — we'd love to talk.
