Job Description

About us:

MicroVision is at the forefront of driving the global adoption of innovative perception solutions, with the goal of making mobility and autonomy safer. Our engineering excellence, based in Washington State, Washington D.C., Hamburg, Germany and Orlando, Florida, enables us to develop and supply integrated lidar hardware and perception software solutions. Our proprietary technologies enhance safety and automation across various industrial applications, including robotics, automated warehouses, and agriculture, and are instrumental in the development of autonomous systems. MicroVision’s core technology, initially developed for the automotive industry, continues to accelerate advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving. Building on our history of providing technology to the military segment, our target offerings include semi- and fully autonomous airborne and terrestrial sensor systems. With our solid-state lidar technologies, encompassing FMCW and MEMS-based long-range lidar and flash-based short-range lidar, integrated with our onboard perception software, MicroVision possesses the expertise to deliver safe mobility at the speed of life.

To strengthen our team at the Orlando location, we are looking for a

Staff Mechanical Engineer - Precision Mechanical Design.

As a key member of MicroVision's

Mechanical Design Engineering

team, you will collaborate with various technical teams in the company to design and take into production market defining Automotive LiDAR product.

Summary:

In this role you will support the design and development of next‑generation electro‑optical sensor products. This role is responsible for owning mechanical designs from early concept and architecture definition through detailed design, system integration, and release, ensuring solutions meet performance, cost, manufacturability, and quality requirements.

The engineer in this role will design and own precision mechanical components and assemblies within a highly integrated, multidisciplinary system. This position emphasizes hands‑on mechanical design, strong documentation rigor, tolerance control, and close collaboration with electrical, optical, systems, manufacturing, and program teams throughout the product development process. This position is expected to provide mechanical technical oversight, guiding architecture decisions, trade studies, and design rigor across the product.

In this role you will:

  • Design and own precision mechanical solutions for advanced electro‑optical sensor products
  • Translate system‑level requirements into robust mechanical architectures and detailed designs
  • Balance performance, cost, reliability, and manufacturability through disciplined engineering practices
  • Enable smooth system integration through strong interface definition and cross‑functional execution
  • Drive mechanical design rigor across documentation, change management, and risk mitigation
  • Contribute to the realization of new technology through concept development and iterative design

Your responsibilities:

  • Lead design and development of precision mechanical components and assemblies for electro‑optical sensor systems
  • Drive early concept and architecture development, including trade studies, layout exploration, and mechanism concepts
  • Create and maintain 3D models, detailed drawings, and GD\&T to support robust, repeatable designs
  • Perform tolerance analysis and support design decisions related to form, fit, and function
  • Own and manage Bills of Material (BOMs), part structures, and configuration control within a formal PDM/PLM environment
  • Lead and execute Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) and Engineering Change Orders (ECOs), including technical impact assessment across disciplines
  • Apply structured problem‑solving methodologies (e.g., 8D) to resolve design, manufacturing, or quality issues
  • Develop and maintain Design Failure Modes and Effects Analyses (DFMEAs) to identify and mitigate mechanical risks
  • Drive Design‑to‑Cost, Value Engineering, and Value‑Add initiatives across mechanical designs and supplier components
  • Collaborate closely with manufacturing engineering, program management, electrical, optical, and systems teams to ensure alignment on requirements, interfaces, and system performance
  • Coordinate technical engagement with suppliers and contract manufacturers to support mechanical design, fabrication, and process development
  • Lead internal design and program reviews, contributing mechanical input to cross‑functional technical decisions

Our requirements:

  • 10-15\+ years of mechanical engineering experience in precision or complex hardware products
  • Strong foundation in mechanical design, drafting, and GD\&T (SolidWorks)
  • Demonstrated experience owning mechanical designs from concept through release
  • Knowledge of designing precision components for injection molding, machining, die casting, and metal injection molding (MIM) processes, with an understanding of material selection and manufacturability tradeoffs
  • Hands‑on experience managing BOMs, configuration control, and formal change management processes (ECO/ECR) through PLM system (Arena)
  • Practical application of structured problem‑solving methodologies such as 8D or equivalent
  • Experience developing and maintaining DFMEAs
  • Familiarity with Design‑to‑Cost and Value Engineering approaches
  • Strong cross‑functional communication skills, with experience working across mechanical, manufacturing, electrical, optical, and systems engineering teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience serving as mechanical lead or subsystem owner on a hardware product
  • Background in precision electro‑mechanical or opto‑mechanical systems
  • Experience supporting products across concept, development, validation, and release phases
  • Exposure to supplier‑driven design optimization or cost reduction initiatives
  • Experience working in a regulated industry such as automotive, defense, aerospace, or safety‑critical products, including adherence to structured development and documentation processes
