Description of Work
This position is located at Central Prison Healthcare Complex, Raleigh, NC. Central Prison is a close-custody prison housing male offenders. Central Prison serves as the hub for healthcare for the male inmate population. The facility is designed to house a maximum capacity of 1104 offenders. The Medical Director supports the Chief of Integrated Mental Health Services by providing leadership for psychiatric and behavioral health care. They supervise physicians and physician extenders, work closely with the hospital director, wardens, and clinical leaders, and ensure that patients receive appropriate, high quality care. The role helps develop and implement medical/psychiatric/behavioral health policies, procedures, and operating standards for the Department of Adult Correction and oversees their consistent use across facilities.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
Administrative Responsibilities \& Duties:
- Leads and evaluates the performance of all supervised medical/psychiatric and behavioral health providers, ensuring compliance with policies, bylaws, and regulatory standards.
- Implements directives from the Chief of Integrated Mental Health Services and coordinates closely with wardens, administrators, and clinical departments to resolve issues and support operations.
- Oversee quality of care through monitoring, review processes, credentialing oversight, and participation in quality improvement initiatives.
- Provides clinical leadership, including directing treatment plans, participating in on‑call coverage, advising multidisciplinary staff, and supporting utilization review efforts.
- Serves as a key liaison across custody, nursing, administrative, and behavioral health teams to align services, address grievances, manage referrals, and support facility-wide coordination.
Salary Range: $170,121\.00 - 340,243\.00

Minimum Education and Experience

Licensed to practice medicine in the state of North Carolina and three years of experience including two years in health services delivery management.
