Short Summary about Job:
We are seeking a Systems Engineer to develop and document high-level requirements for new and proposed projects, translating stakeholder needs into technical specifications. This role facilitates the expansion of requirements into traceable, lower-level Systems, Structures, and Components (SSC) requirements, defines and documents system interfaces, and supports project teams in design verification, risk management, and cost modeling. The Systems Engineer also develops systems engineering standards and best practices and applies model-based systems engineering (MBSE) approaches across the project lifecycle.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in engineering or a STEM discipline from a U.S.-based ABET-accredited university with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience, OR a Master's degree with 1-2 years of model-based systems engineering (MBSE) experience.
- Familiarity with NQA-1, ISO 9001, or equivalent quality control systems.
- Understanding of design control principles and formal change management.
- Background in a hardware-based industry with strict workflow and quality assurance standards (nuclear, aerospace, automotive, medical devices, or similar).
- Experience working with suppliers/vendors to define technical specifications and evaluate design responses.
- Understanding of requirements hierarchy and flow-down.
- Knowledge of verification methods and their application.
- Familiarity with interface management principles.
- Experience with requirements, traceability, and configuration management.
- Demonstrated experience developing technical requirements for hardware systems (mechanical, electrical, controls, instrumentation).
- Ability to read and understand engineering drawings, P\&IDs, electrical schematics, and control system documentation.
- Must be able to pass a drug screening.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance is preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience using systems integration software (DOORS, Visure, GENESYS, or similar requirements management tools).
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) certification.
- Experience with design verification and validation processes (FAT, SAT, commissioning).
- Knowledge of hazardous area classifications, safety instrumented systems, or explosion prevention systems.
- Experience in regulated industries requiring formal requirements management (nuclear, aerospace, FDA-regulated).
- Background in process equipment, manufacturing systems, or production facility design.
- Experience with risk management methodologies and risk tracking.
- Experience with cost estimation and project financial planning.
- Familiarity with relevant codes and standards (ASME, NFPA, OSHA, NEC, ISA).
Miscellaneous/Additional Information:
- This position is located in Oak Ridge, TN.
- Schedule is full-time, Monday – Friday, 40-hour week.
- Develops and documents high-level requirements for new or proposed projects, translating stakeholder needs into technical specifications.
- Facilitates expansion of high-level requirements into traceable lower-level Systems, Structures, and Components (SSC) requirements with clear parent-child relationships.
- Implements and maintains requirements in systems integration tools (Visure, DOORS, DOORS Next Gen).
- Establishes and enforces requirements quality standards including measurability, testability, traceability, and completeness.
- Defines and documents interfaces between systems, ensuring both sides of each interface specify performance parameters (flow rates, pressures, temperatures, data protocols, etc.).
- Coordinates interface requirements across facility systems (electrical, mechanical, controls, safety, etc.).
- Writes and critically reviews technical documents (Design Interface Requirements, Engineering Design Specifications, Design Verification Records).
- Supports project leads in translating operational needs and safety requirements into equipment design specifications.
- Coordinates with quality assurance to ensure traceability through design, fabrication, and testing.
- Supports project leads in risk identification, monitoring, and documentation.
- Assists in developing cost models for proposed projects based on requirements scope.
- Develops and maintains systems engineering standards, templates, and best practices.
- Trains engineers on requirements quality principles and systems integration tools.
