Job Description
Virtual Chief Information Officer (vCIO)
Fractional IT Director • Client Advocate • Business Alignment
Full-Time \| Hybrid \| Boise, ID
About the Role
TotalCare IT is looking for an exceptional Virtual CIO (vCIO) to join our Business Alignment team. This is not your average IT role. Our vCIOs act as fractional IT Directors embedded within our clients’ organizations — trusted advisors who sit at the table with business owners and C-Suite executives, advocating for smart technology decisions that drive real business outcomes.
You will manage a portfolio of clients simultaneously, building deep relationships with each, understanding their goals, and translating complex technology into clear business strategy. You’ll work closely with our Technical Alignment Engineers (TAEs), Design Desk, and operations team to deliver a world-class managed IT experience that clients can feel and measure.
If you are a confident communicator, a strategic thinker, naturally curious about technology, and energized by helping organizations grow — we want to talk to you.
💼 This is a client-facing leadership role. You are the face of TotalCare IT to our clients.
🎯 Success is measured by client retention, QBR execution, proposal wins, and KPI achievement.
🤝 Previous MSP experience is a significant advantage — but not required.
What You’ll Do
Be the Trusted Advisor to Our Clients
- Serve as a fractional IT Director for a portfolio of managed service clients, advocating for their technology interests
- Build and maintain executive-level relationships with business owners and C-Suite stakeholders
- Lead Quarterly Business Review (QBR) meetings — preparing technology roadmaps, budgets, and strategic recommendations tailored to each client’s goals
- Onboard new clients and establish steering committees to guide long-term technology decisions
- Educate clients on cybersecurity risks, technology lifecycle management, and the value of proactive IT investment
Drive Technology Strategy and Proposals
- Use technology benchmarking outputs to identify gaps, risks, and improvement opportunities
- Develop and present proposals for new products, services, and projects that align client technology to business objectives
- Collaborate with the Design team to build accurate, timely proposals and walk clients through investment decisions
- Manage opportunities through the full sales cycle — from identification to close
Collaborate and Coordinate Across Teams
- Conduct weekly preflight check-ins with team to align on upcoming client visits and service priorities
- Participate in the Noise Abatement Process meetings to proactively reduce chronic support issues
- Attend Standards Committee meetings to contribute to the development of the technology benchmarking library
- Partner with the Project Manager to ensure smooth client onboarding and project execution
- Actively participate in daily team huddles and weekly department meetings
Manage Your Portfolio with Precision
- Maintain a well-organized ticket queue, triaging, escalating, and closing tickets to ensure timely service delivery
- Track and report on KPIs including QBR attendance, client touches, proposals proposed and won, and ticket aging
- Balance the needs and priorities of multiple clients simultaneously with professionalism and composure
- Maintain meticulous documentation of client interactions, service activities, and agreement utilization
Who You Are
The ideal candidate brings a rare combination of business instinct, technical literacy, and genuine people skills. You are someone clients trust immediately, and colleagues love working alongside.
Strategic Communicator:
You can distill complex technology into clear business language. You listen more than you talk, ask the right questions, and present with poise in front of any audience, from small business owners to CFOs.
Business-First Thinker:
You understand how businesses operate, think in terms of ROI and risk, and are comfortable discussing budgets, P\&L, and organizational priorities. Technology is your tool; business outcomes are your goal.
Client Champion:
You naturally advocate for the client. You remember the details of their business, their pain points, and their goals, and you show up prepared, every time.
Organized \& KPI-Driven:
You thrive on accountability. You track your metrics, manage your time across multiple clients without dropping the ball, and take pride in hitting goals.
Technically Literate:
You may not be hands-on with a keyboard, but you understand IT infrastructure, cybersecurity concepts, and the technology landscape well enough to guide client decisions with confidence.
Collaborative by Nature:
You work well within a structured team, communicate proactively, share knowledge freely, and contribute to a culture of excellence.
Qualifications
Required
- 5\+ years of experience in IT consulting, IT leadership, or a client-facing technology advisory role

- Strong understanding of business principles including ROI, total cost of ownership (TCO), and IT budgeting
- Working knowledge of IT infrastructure, cybersecurity frameworks, and technology lifecycle management
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills; polished and confident presentation ability
- Proven ability to manage relationships and priorities across multiple clients or accounts simultaneously
- Goal-oriented with a track record of meeting or exceeding KPIs
Preferred
- Previous experience working at or with a Managed Service Provider (MSP), strongly preferred

- Relevant certifications (e.g., ITIL, CompTIA, CISSP, or vendor-specific) are a bonus
A Day in the Life
No two days are identical, but here’s a glimpse at what your week looks like:
Morning:
Start with a team huddle — share your wins, your plan, and any roadblocks. Review your ticket queue and client touches for the day.
Client Work:
Prep for an upcoming QBR, jump on a client call to walk through a proposal, or collaborate with the team on a benchmarking finding that needs your input.
Collaboration:
Weekly preflight with the team to align on an upcoming visit. A Design Desk knowledge transfer meeting to review a proposal in progress.
Strategy:
Attend the Opportunities Management meeting to review open proposals and strategize on how to move them to “Won.”
Close Out:
Document your client touches, update ticket statuses, and wrap up the day knowing exactly what’s moving forward tomorrow.
