Job Description

Company Description

Unusual Whales is a financial data company with a focus on US markets \& options. We process around 5-10 million option trades each day (depending on volatility), 67 million stock trades and have customers from retail investors to hedge funds and leading media companies. We are a small team with employees from all over the world and are remote first (we do not have an office). We don't have regular weekly meetings and just focus on the one thing we love: Code \& building cool software.

Role Description

We're hiring our first dedicated BDR to feed the top of our sales funnel. The job has two halves:

Inbound qualification: every inbound lead lands with you first. You run a short discovery, qualify against fit, and book a meeting with the founder or CEO for the pitch and close.

Outbound prospecting: you build target lists alongside the founder, research decision-makers at hedge funds, prop shops, asset managers, and quant-adjacent companies, run personalized outbound, and book qualified meetings.

Location

Remote/work from home; SF Bay Area preferred. Reports to the CEO with founder oversight during transition. Start date: ASAP.

Responsibilities

  • Own the full sales cycle for inbound leads: discovery, demo, pricing, negotiation, close
  • Run live product demos for technical and financial buyers (founders, quants, PMs, heads of trading)
  • Triage and qualify: close what fits your book, escalate strategic or high-ACV deals to the senior enterprise AE or founder
  • Maintain clean CRM hygiene and accurate forecasting
  • Partner with product and marketing/growth on lead scoring, packaging, and self-serve improvements
  • Provide structured feedback that shapes the product roadmap for self-serve enterprise licensing
  • Collaborate with the outbound AE on handoffs

Requirements

  • 2-4 years of closing experience (SMB / mid-market) at a fintech company, ideally in data sales
  • Fluency in options (the Greeks, common strategies, market structure) and general conversance in prediction markets, futures, equities, and crypto
  • Strong technical literacy: API docs, authentication, data schemas, webhooks
  • Excellent written communication; comfortable running async discovery
  • Crisp demo skills; ability to handle technical objections live
  • Clean CRM discipline (Salesforce, HubSpot, or similar)
  • Startup-ready: comfortable operating without a full playbook and building process as you go
  • Prior experience at a financial data vendor or quant-adjacent company is a plus
  • Experience with product-led growth or self-serve motions is a plus
  • Familiarity with modern outbound tooling (Clay, Outreach, Apollo) is a plus
  • Bay Area location / existing relationships in the Bay Area fintech \+ AI ecosystems is a plus

Base

USD 75,000 to USD 95,000 plus variable; OTE USD 150,000 to USD 190,000 (50/50). Meaningful early-hire equity grant. Full health / dental / vision; 401(k) where applicable. Remote; home office stipend.

How to Apply

Email [email protected] with your resume. In your note, tell us about the most technically complex deal you've closed and why it closed.
