School Counselor (PK8)

Position Objective
Promote and enhance student learning and well-being through a comprehensive school counseling program focused on academic development, career awareness, and personal/social growth. Utilize a variety of strategies, activities, and resources to support the developmental needs of students in grades PK8\.
Key ResponsibilitiesAcademic, Career \& Personal/Social Development* Deliver classroom guidance lessons focused on self-awareness, coping skills, peer relationships, communication, decision-making, conflict resolution, study skills, multicultural awareness, and substance education.
- Provide individual and small group counseling addressing academic development, personal adjustment, family concerns, interpersonal relationships, self-esteem, and behavior support.
- Support early career awareness as a developmental process of identifying interests, strengths, and values.
- Assist students with course and subject selection as developmentally appropriate.
- Identify and nurture students special talents and abilities.
- Work to resolve educational barriers and support student success.
Assessment \& Student Support* Assist students in identifying skills, achievements, and interests through counseling activities and interpretation of standardized assessments.
- Support diverse learners and students requiring specialized attention.
- Assist in coordinating and administering school-wide assessments.
- Contribute to school-wide master scheduling and individual student scheduling as assigned.
Collaboration \& Consultation* Consult with teachers, administrators, school psychologists, social workers, and outside agencies regarding student welfare.
- Make referrals for appropriate school and community-based services.
- Participate in school improvement and interdisciplinary teams.
- Provide consultation and in-service support to staff as needed.
- Serve on school and community committees addressing the needs of children and families.
- Coordinate school, community, and business resources that promote student growth and development.
Family \& Community Engagement* Communicate with parents/guardians through conferences, workshops, newsletters, and other outreach efforts.
- Provide guidance information and resources to families regarding student development and future planning.
- Maintain current career and postsecondary awareness materials and community connections.
Records \& Confidentiality* Maintain accurate and confidential student records, including health, attendance, progress, activity, and transcript records as applicable.
- Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations regarding student information and privacy.
Supervision
Receives general administrative direction from the School Principal.
Supervisory Responsibilities
May supervise support staff as assigned.
QualificationsEducation \& Experience* Masters degree in School Counseling or related field required.
- Knowledge of Vermonts K12 School Counseling Program standards.
- Meets professional standards for school counselors.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively and respectfully with students, families, staff, administrators, and community members.
Certifications \& Licenses* Valid Vermont Professional Educators License with School Counselor endorsement (364).
- Meets all competencies and qualifications required under Vermont educator licensing regulations.
Skills* Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to interpret assessment data, including standard scores and percentiles.
- Effective problem-solving, conflict resolution, and stress management skills.
- Proficiency with word processing and database programs; experience with Microsoft Office preferred.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately.
Physical Effort \& Working Conditions* Frequent standing, walking, sitting, and use of hands for computer and written tasks.
- Occasional lifting, carrying, or assisting students as necessary.
- Regular exposure to emotionally sensitive or stressful situations requiring professional judgment and composure.
- Work environment is typically quiet to moderate, with occasional outdoor exposure.
