Ellipsis U.S. Onshore (“Ellipsis”) is a Dallas-based private energy company focused on the acquisition and development of large, producing oil and gas assets across major onshore basins in the United States. Backed by Westlawn Group (a Houston-based private investment firm), Ellipsis executes a non-operated strategy and currently manages a portfolio of approximately 1,500 wells producing in excess of 20,000 BOE/day across the Permian Basin, Haynesville Shale, and DJ Basin. Job Description

The Data Engineer will be responsible for assisting the data science and technical team in several areas including but not limited to database creation and management, production monitoring, asset management, reserves reporting, LOS analysis, and asset evaluations. They will also act as a liaison between the technical and the finance teams to convert reserve report statements into outputs suitable for corporate level returns models.

The successful candidate will be comfortable in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities from a multi-disciplined team and will be expected to adapt to the business needs in various capacities (learning new software, assisting other departments, etc.).

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Data Science Director in managing oil and gas data from a variety of sources
  • Support engineering team in maintaining and updating ARIES databases, including production, forecasts, and economic data
  • Design, build, and maintain relational databases for production data, well-level economics, and asset tracking across multiple operating basins
  • Prepare and quality-check reserve report inputs and outputs, ensuring data integrity between engineering models and financial reporting
  • Build and maintain BI tools and dashboards to support analysis and reporting in Excel and other visualization software (Power BI, Spotfire, etc.)
  • Aggregate, clean, and normalize production data from operators, state regulatory agencies, and third-party data providers (e.g., Enverus, IHS)
  • Support asset management efforts including tracking well performance, ownership changes, and key operational metrics
  • Create visualizations and summaries to support engineering and management insights
  • Assist with ad hoc data analysis to support deal screening, due diligence, and acquisition underwriting
  • Manage and administer data subscriptions, API integrations, and software tools used by the technical team
  • Document data workflows, maintain data dictionaries, and establish best practices for data governance
  • Support other departments as needed, including finance, legal, and operations, on data-related requests

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, data science, accounting, math, engineering or a related field
  • 2-5 years of experience in data engineering or analytics or a technical role in the oil and gas industry
  • Proficiency in SQL and relational database design
  • Working knowledge of Python or R for data manipulation, automation, and analysis
  • Use of AI to assist in coding in SQL and Python
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate technical data concepts for non-technical stakeholders
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy and integrity
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel
  • Some travel may be required (data rooms, conferences, etc.)
  • Flexible to work a variety of hours as business needs dictate
  • Proven track record of handling multiple projects concurrently under tight deadlines
  • Willingness to learn new tools, systems, and industry concepts

Additional Desired Skills

  • Ability to write macros and functions in Microsoft Office programs
  • Experience with oil and gas data platforms such as Enverus (DrillingInfo), IHS, or similar industry data providers
  • Familiarity with production data structures, decline curve analysis concepts, and upstream oil and gas terminology
  • Experience with cloud-based data infrastructure (e.g., AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud)
  • Familiarity with BI and visualization tools
  • Exposure to API development or integration (REST APIs, webhooks)
  • Experience with version control systems (Git/GitHub)
  • Knowledge of petroleum economics software (e.g., ARIES, ComboCurve)
  • Experience building stochastic or Monte Carlo simulation models
  • Familiarity with non-operated working interest deal structures, joint interest billing (JIB), and LP reporting
