Zimmerman Associates, Inc. (ZAI) is seeking a Veterinarian to support one of our federal agency clients within the FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM). This is a part-time, temporary project-based position that is currently conducted remotely, with flexible scheduling to accommodate the selected candidate's availability. There is also the potential for the role to transition into a permanent position based on project needs and performance.

The ideal candidate will work independently while collaborating with FDA scientists and veterinarians on issues related to animal drug compounding and veterinary medicine. This role offers an opportunity to apply clinical expertise, research skills, and professional judgment to support important regulatory decisions affecting animal health.

The primary objective of this role is to support FDA review activities related to nominations for compounded drug substances used in animals. The selected candidate will evaluate scientific and clinical evidence, develop recommendations, and prepare comprehensive reports to support regulatory decision-making.

Primary Responsibilities

Review and evaluate nominations for compounded drug substances used in nonfood-producing animals, food-producing animals, and free-ranging wildlife in accordance with FDA-established criteria.

Conduct scientific and clinical research using peer-reviewed literature, veterinary and pharmacology references, professional resources, and consultations with subject matter experts to support evaluations.

Analyze available evidence and apply clinical expertise to assess the safety, effectiveness, medical necessity, and appropriateness of nominated substances.

Develop recommendations regarding the inclusion of substances on FDA compounding lists and prepare comprehensive reports documenting findings, supporting evidence, and rationale.

Collaborate with FDA veterinarians and other stakeholders by participating in meetings, sharing insights, discussing findings, and contributing to regulatory decision-making.

Follow established review procedures, guidance documents, and project requirements while managing assignments independently.

Collect, track, and analyze project-related data and statistics to support reporting and program objectives.

Provide veterinary subject matter expertise across a variety of species, including companion animals, livestock, wildlife, and exotic animals.

Required Qualifications

Be a Board-certified Veterinarian from an accredited school

Active veterinary license in good standing in the state where employed

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to produce technical and scientific reports

Strong analytical, research, and critical thinking abilities

Experience working independently and managing multiple review assignments

Clinical knowledge and experience treating companion animals, including dogs, cats, and horses

Clinical experience with zoo, exotic, wildlife, avian, reptile, or nontraditional animal species

Familiarity with veterinary pharmacology

Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance
