Primary Function:
The 6th Grade Seminar teacher will teach the 6th Grade Seminar Courses that will equip incoming 6th graders with the skills necessary for a successful transition from elementary to middle school. Students enrolled in this course will be taught strategies on success skills for effective time management, study skills, goal setting, organizational techniques, communication skills, critical thinking and problem solving skills, personal qualities (responsibility, self-esteem, self-management, and integrity), and technological skills that will aid them on their path to graduation. Additionally, 6th grade seminar students will embark on a self-discovery mission to uncover personal values, goals, and attributes that will shape decisions when choosing a career pathway for the tenth grade. Each student will conduct career and college research to begin developing their career plan. Students will complete employment applications, create resumes, participate in interviews, and attend a career fair to allow them to anticipate the requirements and necessities for their success in their desired field.
Duties And Responsibilites
- Teach 6th grade seminar courses using prescribed curriculum.
- Provides strategies, implements programs/practices, and delivers instruction for improving student
achievement, classroom organization, and management of real world success skills consistent with
curriculum.
- Collaborates with other Academy/Grade level team members and Academy Coach to ensure:
- Ensure ACP XELLO is implemented with fidelity
- A balanced and challenging instructional program for all students.
- Coordination and timing of assignments to help students succeed.
- The development of interdisciplinary connections in thinking and career/college readiness skills.
- Student engagement in authentic, real world instruction.
- Facilitates student/teacher and parent/teacher conferences as needed.
- Collaborates with Academy Principal, Academy Coach, teachers, counselors and others using multiple data sources to determine best placements for students.
- Participates in Academy team efforts to celebrate and recognize student success.
- Promotes and supports professionalism and continuous professional development.
- Keeps current on instructional/transitional best practices.
- Attend leadership and other meetings for the purpose of networking, enhancing partnerships, and providing experiential learning opportunities for students.
- Support the implementation and documentation of the National Standards of Practice (NSOP) for academy accreditation.
- In partnership with the Academy Coach and school leadership teams, implement the current Academies of
Racine strategic plan.
- Communicate academy information with the Academy Principal, and Academy Coach.
- Assist Academy Coach with coordination of academy related experiential learning experiences that are
specific to freshman.
- Collaborate with Academy Coach to review academy program of study and curriculum and recommend
program modifications.
- Promote and participate in academy related professional learning communities within the school.
- Assist Academy Coach with collection, analyze and communicate freshman academy data.
- Assist Academy Coach, and school administration on student and family engagement opportunities.
Knowledge, Skills, And Ability
- Knowledge of curriculum, assessment, and instruction.
- Demonstrated excellence in teaching as evidence by performance evaluations.
- Understanding of the high school child and ability to establish strong relationships, especially with freshman.
- Understanding of best middle school to high school transitional practices.
- Ability to work well with all stakeholders (students, teachers, parents and administrators).
- Strong skills in data collection and analysis of formative and summative data sources.
- Strong technology skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication, facilitation and collaboration skills.
Qualifications
- EC-MC (Early Childhood - Grade 6) or
- MC-EA (Grade 1 - Grade 8) or
- EA - A (Grade 5 - Grade 12\.
- This is a 188 day teacher contracted position to begin July 1, 2022\.
Work Environment
Busy office environment with multiple priorities and frequent interruptions.
