Job Description
About the Role
UMATR are supporting a VC backed startup looking for an experienced Platform Engineer to help build the technical foundation of a rapidly growing engineering organisation. You'll work closely with senior technical leadership to design the systems, tooling, and operational practices that allow engineering teams to move quickly while maintaining reliability, security, and scalability.
This is a founding-level engineering opportunity where you'll have significant ownership over architecture decisions, developer experience, infrastructure, and production operations. Rather than joining an established platform team, you'll help define how platform engineering is practiced across the company.
What You'll Do
- Design and evolve a secure multi-tenant platform capable of supporting multiple customer environments while maintaining strong isolation and operational efficiency.
- Own core infrastructure across cloud environments, ensuring scalability, reliability, and security as the platform grows.
- Build and improve the engineering delivery lifecycle, including CI/CD, testing infrastructure, preview environments, and local developer workflows.
- Establish observability, monitoring, alerting, incident response practices, and reliability standards across production systems.
- Design reusable onboarding and integration patterns that reduce the effort required to support new customers and systems over time.
- Collaborate closely with application engineers on platform architecture, distributed systems design, and backend services.
- Contribute product code where needed and help solve engineering challenges across the stack.
What We're Looking For
- Experience designing and operating large-scale distributed systems in production.
- Strong understanding of cloud infrastructure, platform architecture, and modern infrastructure-as-code practices.
- Experience building internal platforms or developer tooling that improves engineering productivity.
- Strong background in production operations, including observability, incident response, performance tuning, and system reliability.
- Comfortable making architectural trade-offs across infrastructure, backend systems, and developer experience.
- Experience building scalable systems that balance operational simplicity with long-term flexibility.
- Excellent software engineering fundamentals with the ability to contribute beyond infrastructure.
- Comfortable working in ambiguous, fast-moving environments where many systems and processes are being created from scratch.
What Success Looks Like
- Engineers can move from development to production with minimal friction.
- Production systems are observable, reliable, and easy to operate.
- Platform capabilities scale alongside customer growth without significant increases in operational complexity.
- Infrastructure and developer workflows become increasingly reusable and automated as the organisation expands.
- Engineering teams spend more time building products and less time managing operational overhead.
