About The Role
The HR Generalist for the West/Southwest Region plays a vital role in providing comprehensive human resources support to assigned store locations, including those in California. Reporting directly to the HR Business Partner for the region, this position is responsible for ensuring consistent application of HR policies, timely resolution of employee concerns, and compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws, with a particular focus on California labor regulations. The HR Generalist serves as a primary point of contact for store team members and managers, fostering strong relationships and supporting operational HR functions such as employee relations, unemployment claims, payroll, and compliance. This role offers an excellent opportunity for professional growth, acting as a stepping stone toward a full HR Business Partner position.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field, or equivalent work experience
- Minimum of 13 years of HR experience in multi-location or hourly environments
- Experience with employee relations, unemployment claims, payroll, or timekeeping support preferred
- Strong knowledge of federal and California employment laws
- SHRM-CP, PHR, or California HR certification is a plus
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and HR management systems
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities
Responsibilities
- Serve as a first-line HR contact for store team members and managers across California and the broader West/Southwest region
- Conduct level-one employee relations investigations and escalate complex issues appropriately
- Support the documentation of corrective actions and employee performance issues
- Build and maintain strong relationships through regular communication and site visits
- Manage unemployment claims, with a focus on California-specific regulations and procedures
- Ensure compliance with California wage and hour laws, meal/rest period requirements, and other labor regulations
- Assist with payroll processing, including reviewing timecards, supporting employment changes, and correcting timekeeping errors
- Support onboarding and offboarding processes, including documentation specific to California
- Participate in store visits to assess HR compliance and employee engagement initiatives
- Support HR reporting, audits, and compliance reviews
- Assist in employee engagement, training initiatives, and other HR operational tasks
