Job Description
Lightningware — Scottsdale Airpark, Arizona
1 opening
$120,000 base \+ bonuses \+ medical, dental, vision \+ 4 weeks PTO
Lightningware builds products with real scale, real edge, and real consequence. We are app publishers based in Scottsdale Airpark. Our products are used by millions. Our flagship platform, Thundr, has more than 11 million monthly active users and handles over a billion requests per day.
We do not make forgettable software.
We do not respect stale thinking.
We do not preserve mediocrity because it is familiar.
We rebuild. Rework. Replace. Start again. Thundr has been rebuilt from the ground up three times because “good enough” is how companies decay.
We are looking for a Lead Designer.
Not a button-polisher.
Not a trend-chaser.
Not a person whose portfolio is twelve slightly different SaaS dashboards floating in tasteful gradients.
We want someone dangerous.
Someone with real design intelligence. Someone who understands that design is not there to decorate a product after the serious people are done talking. Design is the hit. The signal. The seduction. The emotional architecture. The thing people feel before they understand why they care.
At Lightningware, one of our deepest beliefs is simple:
our products should make people feel something.
That is not fluff here. It is law.
If your work has ever made people obsessed, unsettled, drawn in, loyal, curious, slightly addicted, or unable to stop talking about it, you’ll understand what we mean.
What you’ll actually be doing
You will define how our products look, feel, move, signal, and land.
You will shape brand identity, product design, interaction language, visual systems, and the emotional texture of products used by millions of people. Your work will not disappear into an approval labyrinth run by committees with dead eyes. You will have real influence here.
You’ll work closely with people who build fast, think hard, and do not need corporate daycare. You’ll help create products that feel alive in a market full of anaemic, over-sanitized slop.
This role matters. A lot.
Because when a company is serious about building things people actually care about, design is not a department. It is a weapon.
What we want
We want someone with a proven portfolio of exceptional work. Not “solid.” Not “clean.” Exceptional.
You should have deep command of:
- design language
- branding
- typography
- composition
- interaction
- visual hierarchy
- emotional resonance
- taste
You should know how to build work that feels inevitable in hindsight and impossible to imitate badly.
You should understand the difference between:
- minimal and empty
- loud and powerful
- elegant and weak
- polished and alive
You should be able to look at a product and see not just whether it works, but whether it has a pulse.
You should care about meaning, tension, symbolism, energy, memory, identity, and why some things stick in the mind while others die on contact.
Who this is for
This is for someone with serious intelligence.
Not performative intelligence. Not LinkedIn intelligence. Real intelligence.
The kind that gets bored easily. The kind that has probably become allergic to corporate language, fake missions, fake urgency, fake culture, fake niceness, fake innovation, and entire buildings full of people professionally pretending to care.
You may be a little jaded. Good. That usually means you’ve seen enough to know how rare it is when something is actually worth your time.
We are looking for people with:
- very high general intelligence
- exceptional creativity
- unusual taste
- open-mindedness
- intensity
- a dissident streak
- contempt for the bland and the automatic
You do not need to be conventional.
You do not need to be “well-rounded.”
You do not need to speak in HR-approved vowels.
But you do need to be excellent.
What Lightningware is like
We are not ordinary.
We build brands and apps that hit at scale. We use modern tools and we change things aggressively when the old way stops being the best way. Our stack includes Svelte, Python, Elixir, JavaScript, and Rust. We have our own way of building software, thinking about design, and operating the business. People who join us do not just get better at their craft — they usually end up rethinking how the whole game is played.
The environment is relaxed, creative, and ambitious. No fake corporate theater. No ritualized nonsense. No career fog. Just smart people, hard standards, serious autonomy, and the chance to do work that actually goes out into the world and lands.
