Sr Software Engineer, Cloud Services & Backend Modernization

We are seeking a Software Engineer to help build the next generation of AWS cloud-hosted backend services that support Jeppesen Download Manager (JDM) desktop and mobile applications. These services enable aviation customers and pilots to access, manage, and distribute Jeppesen data across desktop, mobile, and avionics workflows.

This role is ideal for an experienced backend and cloud engineer who can help design and implement modern cloud-native services while also supporting the existing production infrastructure. The modernization effort will focus on building a scalable, resilient architecture that can support growth, high download volumes, and new products or data packages.

This engineer will also support and gain knowledge of the existing Jeppesen Download Manager infrastructure and legacy services built with technologies including AWS, Kubernetes, Apache, Linux, SQL Server, PHP, Docker, and CloudFormation. They should be comfortable working in a production environment where uptime, data integrity, automation, cloud security, and operational discipline matter.

This role is remote-friendly, with preference given to candidates based in the Denver, CO or Austin, TX metro areas, as you'll need to be in office on a schedule ranging from quarterly to every other month. Candidates residing outside these regions should be willing and able to travel to an office location on that same basis.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and modernize cloud-hosted backend services using cloud-native technologies and managed services where appropriate
• Help design scalable and resilient backend architecture that can support growth, high download volumes, and new products or data packages with minimal engineering effort
• Improve backend web services, integrations, automated jobs, and operational workflows used by desktop and mobile applications
• Improve infrastructure automation, CI/CD, monitoring, high availability, disaster recovery, and production support practices
• Apply cloud security best practices across services, infrastructure, automation, access control, and deployment processes
• Identify and mitigate risks, issues, and technical debt in backend services and cloud infrastructure
• Maintain and support existing AWS-hosted legacy backend services built on Apache, Linux, PHP, SQL Server, Kubernetes, Docker, and CloudFormation
• Manage, debug, and maintain Kubernetes clusters, containerized services, infrastructure-as-code templates, and AWS environments.
• Patch and maintain existing infrastructure and application
• Collaborate with desktop, mobile, QA, DevOps, and product teams to deliver reliable backend services
• Use AI-augmented development tools such as Claude, Codex, or similar coding assistants to support software design, implementation, debugging, testing, refactoring, and code review while preserving code quality, security, maintainability, and human accountability

Required Qualifications

• Experience developing or modernizing backend services in production cloud environments
• Experience with cloud infrastructure, cloud-native architecture patterns, and common cloud operational practices
• Experience designing and supporting scalable, resilient backend systems that serve high-volume customer workflows
• Experience with establishing CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure automation, automated backend jobs, deployment workflows, or operational scripting
• Understanding of high availability, disaster recovery, observability, patching, and production support practices
• Familiarity with cloud security best practices, including access control, patch management, secrets handling, and secure service configuration
• Experience with Kubernetes cluster management, troubleshooting, configuration, and containerized application deployments
• Experience with infrastructure as code
• Ability to diagnose and resolve issues across application code, infrastructure, containers, databases, and cloud services
• Experience using AI-augmented development tools such as Claude, Codex, or similar coding assistants to support development, debugging, testing, and code review
• Ability to work independently on moderately complex technical problems while collaborating with senior engineers and cross-functional teams
• Strong communication skills and the ability to document technical decisions, risks, and operational procedures

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience building cloud-native services using AWS managed services and modern cloud migration patterns
• Experience designing robust and extensible backend systems that can onboard new products, packages, or data distribution workflows with minimal engineering effort
• Experience supporting backend services for desktop, mobile, data distribution, or customer-facing applications
• Hands-on experience with Linux, Apache, PHP, and Docker
• Experience database performance troubleshooting, schema changes, or data migration
• Experience improving CI/CD, HA/DR, monitoring, alerting, and incident response practices
• Experience establishing safe agentic engineering workflows for complex codebases and production systems

Pay is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well market and business considerations: Summary Pay Range: $131,000-$160,000
