Job Description

Staff Software Engineer / Technical Lead (Full-Stack)

New York, NY · Hybrid · Full-Time

About the role

A fast-scaling financial technology company is building a real-time data platform that's changing how a major segment of the institutional market operates. We're bringing transparency and speed to a corner of finance that has run on manual process and fragmented data for decades, and the application layer is where that promise becomes real for our clients.

We're looking for a Technical Lead to own the technical direction and delivery of one of our core product verticals. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who wants to build, not just direct. You'll set the standard the rest of the team codes to.

What you'll do

This role is a genuine 50/50 split. Half your time is hands-on: writing production code, owning architecture, and setting the technical bar through the quality of your own work. The other half is technical leadership; mentoring engineers, pressure-testing proposed solutions, unblocking the team, and partnering closely with product and technical project management to turn client needs into performant, intuitive applications.

You'll be the technical authority for your squad: guiding design and code reviews, making the calls on architecture and implementation, and making sure what ships is correct, scalable, and secure. This is not a people-management role, and there are no direct reports. It's for an engineer who leads through craft and judgment, not headcount

Who You Are

  • 8–12\+ years of full-stack engineering experience, with real depth on both sides of the stack
  • Front-end: strong with React, TypeScript, and Node.js. (Comparable modern-framework depth e.g. Angular translates well.)
  • Back-end: Java and Spring Boot, with a solid grasp of microservices and distributed systems
  • You've built data-dense, real-time interfaces; experience with tools like AG Grid, D3, or WebSocket-driven UIs is a strong plus
  • Fluent with REST/GraphQL APIs, SQL and NoSQL, Git, and CI/CD pipelines
  • You've operated at Staff level (or equivalent scope) at companies that were scaling, Series C-and-up startups or mid-size tech firms, so you know what it takes to grow a system and a team
  • Decisive. You listen to strong opinions, then set a clear direction and own it. "Strong opinions, loosely held" is how you work

Nice to have

  • Experience in financial services, fintech, or another regulated, data-intensive domain
  • Docker, Kubernetes, cloud platforms
  • End-to-end testing (Playwright, Selenium, Cucumber)
  • Charting libraries, design systems, accessibility and responsive design

Why this role

You'll shape a product vertical from the technical foundation up, on a small team of seasoned engineers who care about getting it right. If you want your code to be the example others learn from, and you want real ownership over both the architecture and the outcome, this is that seat.
