Remote (U.S.-based required, Central Time Zone preferred)
Role Description
Horsepower Today is seeking a strategic and detail-oriented Fractional Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to lead financial reporting, compliance, and internal audit preparation for a client within the financial services industry. This fractional role will focus on audit readiness. You will be responsible for building a robust, repeatable process to ensure the client meets all federal and state regulatory requirements. A primary focus of this role is the creation of a comprehensive audit workbook and the preparation of complex financial statement footnotes to be reviewed by external third-party auditors.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the preparation for external audits, ensuring all work papers and documentation meet rigorous standards.
- Draft and finalize financial statements, with a specific emphasis on preparing detailed, audit-ready footnotes.
- Design and implement a repeatable "audit workbook" system to streamline future compliance and reporting cycles.
- Ensure all financial functions adhere to strict GAAP requirements and financial services industry regulations.
- Manage financial reporting and planning functions to position the client for long-term operational success.
- Act as the primary point of contact for external audit teams to ensure a seamless review process.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum 7–10 years of progressive experience in accounting and finance, including leadership over financial operations, with 5-7 years of direct audit readiness experience.
- Strong understanding and experience with financial statements, financial reporting, and accounting best practices.
- Deep understanding of GAAP requirements and the specific reporting nuances of the financial services sector (Banking, Insurance, or Credit Unions).
- A stronger background in auditing and financial statement preparation than in general corporate accounting.
- Advanced mastery of ASC standards and the ability to interpret complex financial data.
- Proven ability to build "work papers" and audit trails that can withstand high-level external scrutiny.
Role Details
- Project-based fractional engagement; not a full-time or permanent position. Hours are flexible and commensurate with project scope.
- This is a fully remote position with preference given to candidates in Central Time Zone.
If you excel at building audit-ready processes, navigating complex financial regulations, and delivering clarity under scrutiny, we'd love to connect.
