Business Analyst – Predictive Analytics \| Electric Utility

Role Summary
The Business Analyst serves as the bridge between utility stakeholders, engineering teams, and the delivery organization, ensuring that business needs are translated into clear, actionable requirements that drive the development of the Open Mains solution. The role is responsible for understanding current operational processes, identifying decision-making requirements, documenting functional and non-functional requirements, and ensuring delivered capabilities align with business objectives and field operations. The Business Analyst plays a critical role in defining how Open Mains insights will be consumed, validated, and operationalized by engineering, asset management, and field operations teams.
Key Responsibilities
Requirements Elicitation \& Analysis
- Conduct stakeholder interviews, workshops, and working sessions to gather business, operational, and technical requirements.
- Collaborate with engineering, asset management, reliability, and operations teams to understand existing Open Main investigation and remediation processes.
- Document current-state and future-state workflows, business processes, and decision points.
- Identify pain points, process inefficiencies, and opportunities for operational improvement.
- Facilitate requirements prioritization and scope definition activities.
Business Process \& Workflow Design
- Map end-to-end workflows supporting:
- Open Main detection
- Engineering review and validation
- Field investigation
- Remediation planning
- Feedback and model improvement
- Document operational procedures and business rules that influence model outputs and decision-making.
- Define user journeys and interaction flows for engineering and operational users.
- Ensure proposed workflows align with existing utility processes and governance requirements.
- Support design of human-in-the-loop review and validation processes.
User Stories \& Functional Requirements
- Develop and maintain detailed business requirements, user stories, use cases, and acceptance criteria.
- Define functional requirements for:
- Open Main candidate review workflows
- Risk prioritization dashboards
- Investigation workspaces
- Evidence packages and supporting analytics
- Feedback and validation mechanisms
- Define non-functional requirements including usability, performance, security, auditability, and reporting needs.
- Maintain requirements traceability throughout the project lifecycle.
Data \& Analytics Requirements
- Collaborate with Data Scientists and Data Engineers to define business requirements for data and analytics solutions.
- Document requirements related to:
- AMI interval data
- Network topology and connectivity
- Asset and equipment information
- Historical defects and work orders
- Operational and engineering datasets
- Support development of business definitions, KPIs, and performance measures.
- Ensure analytical outputs align with engineering decision-making needs.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Act as a liaison between business stakeholders and technical teams.
- Facilitate consensus across engineering, operations, data, and technology stakeholders.
- Support executive and operational working sessions.
- Communicate requirements, priorities, assumptions, and constraints clearly to delivery teams.
- Assist in managing stakeholder expectations and addressing requirement changes.
Testing \& Validation Support
- Support development of test scenarios and acceptance criteria.
- Coordinate User Acceptance Testing (UAT) activities with business stakeholders.
- Validate delivered functionality against documented requirements.
- Facilitate defect triage and business validation sessions.
- Ensure business sign-off for key deliverables and releases.
Change Management \& Adoption
- Support creation of user training materials and process documentation.
- Assist with operational readiness and deployment activities.
- Gather and document user feedback to support continuous improvement.
- Help drive adoption of Open Mains capabilities within engineering and operational teams.
Qualifications
- 5\+ years of Business Analysis experience on technology, analytics, or operational transformation initiatives.
- Demonstrated experience gathering and documenting complex business requirements.
- Strong process mapping, workflow analysis, and facilitation skills.
- Experience working within Agile or hybrid delivery environments.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Experience
- Electric utility operations, engineering, reliability, or asset management programs.
- Predictive analytics, AI/ML, or advanced analytics initiatives.
- Grid modernization, asset health, or condition-based maintenance programs.
- Human-in-the-loop decision support solutions.

The Business Analyst is expected to develop a deep understanding of:
- Open Main investigation and validation workflows.
- Engineering review and prioritization processes.
- How engineers evaluate evidence supporting potential Open Main conditions.
- Work package creation and field investigation processes.
- Model feedback loops used to improve precision and recall.
- Performance measures used to evaluate operational effectiveness of the solution.
- Integration points between Open Mains analytics, engineering workflows, and work management processes.
Pay:
The wage range for this role takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs. The disclosed range estimate has not been adjusted for the applicable geographic differential associated with the location at which the position may be filled. At Fractal, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current range is: $120,000 - $170,000\. In addition, for the current performance period, you may be eligible for a discretionary bonus.
