Job Description

Experienced Mechanical Design Engineer - Critical Infrastructure projects

Our client is a global leader in the design, build and maintenance of energy efficient and sustainable critical environments. They employ over 200 staff and specialise in delivering robust power and cooling systems, as well as architectural and structural solutions for highly sensitive facilities. Their work spans sectors including data centres, telecoms, healthcare and education, where reliability and resilience are essential.

The team focuses on high-specification projects including data centre design and build, critical cooling and mechanical systems, and complex infrastructure where operational uptime is paramount.

This role is ideal for a mechanically-focused design engineer who enjoys working on technically challenging projects, can engage confidently with clients, and thrives in a collaborative team environment. Experience in data centre or high efficiency cooling systems is advantageous but not essential.

Job Responsibilities

  • Produce designs for mechanical systems including chilled water, high efficiency cooling and ventilation
  • Create mechanical schematics for both sales and construction documentation
  • Develop mechanical specifications for critical installations and issue to contractors
  • Review mechanical quotations and select suitable contractors
  • Conduct site surveys and provide technical guidance throughout all RIBA stages
  • Liaise with subcontractors, procurement and clients to ensure all designs and specifications are accurate
  • Prepare and submit technical submittals for client review
  • Lead mechanically-focused projects as the main designer
  • Be flexible with workload, including occasional travel to sites

Qualifications / Experience

  • HNC/HND or degree in Building Services Engineering
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a similar mechanical design role
  • Experience with data centre or high efficiency cooling installations preferable
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Competent in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office; Amtech experience preferable
  • Ability to organise and prioritise work to meet deadlines
  • Current experience with a mechanical consultancy or contractor preferred
  • Full driving licence
