Job Description

About Laurel Employment Law

Laurel Employment Law is a California plaintiff-side employment firm representing employees in discrimination, harassment, retaliation, and wage and hour matters. We are one of the fastest-growing firms in our space with a relentless focus on client experience, case outcomes, and the intelligent use of AI across our operations.

The Role

We are looking for a Manager of Paralegal Operations to own the day-to-day management of our paralegal department. This is a people-first role: your job is to make sure a large, distributed team is well-hired, well-supported, and consistently performing. You will report to our SVP of Strategy \& Operations and work closely with firm leadership on staffing, performance, and team development.

The paralegal team is central to how we deliver for clients — how well you run it matters directly to case outcomes and attorney productivity.

What You Will Do

  • Lead hiring and onboarding for the paralegal team — partnering with recruiting to identify strong candidates, run a rigorous process, and set new hires up to contribute quickly
  • Own performance management — build a culture of accountability through clear expectations, regular feedback, and direct conversations when standards are not met
  • Manage staffing and team assignments — ensure caseload distribution is balanced, attorneys are supported, and the team is deployed where it is needed most
  • Develop team leads — coach and support a layer of developing managers so they become genuinely effective
  • Drive adoption of operational improvements — when the operations team rolls out new processes, workflows, or AI-enabled tools, you make sure they land and stick on the paralegal side
  • Be the connective tissue — between attorneys, operations leadership, and the paralegal team; surfacing issues, resolving friction, and keeping communication clear

What We Are Looking For

  • Proven people management experience — you have led a team of 20 or more in a professional services or service delivery environment, and you know what good management looks like at scale
  • Direct and fair — you can hold people accountable and have hard conversations without drama, and people respect you for it
  • Organized and consistent — you build reliable systems, follow through, and do not let things fall through the cracks in a fast-moving environment
  • Strong communicator — you can translate between frontline staff and senior leadership, and you know how to read a room
  • Comfortable in a high-growth, high-change environment — we are moving fast and evolving constantly; you embrace that rather than resist it
  • Low ego, high standards — you want to build something that works and take pride in running it well
  • Adept with technology — you are comfortable navigating software tools and systems, pick up new platforms quickly, and do not need hand-holding when technology changes or new tools are rolled out

Background

We are open on background. Strong candidates might come from a paralegal or legal ops career path, law firm or legal department administration, or people management roles in adjacent professional services environments. Legal industry experience is a plus, not a requirement — what we cannot train is how to lead people.

Location

This role is fully remote. We work on West Coast hours and expect availability and responsiveness during the California business day.

Salary \& Benefits

$130k - $150k depending on experience, plus paid time off, holidays, health insurance, and real opportunities for advancement.

Pay: $130,000\.00 - $150,000\.00 per year

Benefits:

  • Dental insurance
  • Health insurance
  • Paid time off
  • Vision insurance
