Job Description
ABOUT THE ROLE
This is a founding-team-caliber engineering role at a small, experienced startup building a new category of personal computing: a personal cloud that acts as your always-on AI computer. The product gives every user a real Linux environment with persistent storage, frontier AI model access, built-in hosting, and an agentic layer that can build websites, run automations, and connect to external tools — all accessible via browser, app, Slack, email, or text. Founded by the first engineer at Substack and an early engineer at Stripe, and backed by the Stripe founders and Vercel's CEO, the team is rewriting what it means to have a home on the internet. You'll work directly with the founders on core product and infrastructure as the company scales from early users toward a mass-market personal cloud.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Generalist Product Engineering
Operate as a true generalist across the full stack — from designing and shipping backend systems and APIs to crafting polished, intuitive user experiences. You'll move fluidly between infrastructure, agent tooling, and consumer-facing product surfaces.
Python \& TypeScript Development
Write production-quality code in Python and TypeScript across the platform, including agentic workflows, cloud infrastructure abstractions, and user-facing product features.
AI Product Development
Build and iterate on AI-native product experiences — including coding agents (e.g., Claude Code, Codex, Gemini), agent harness integrations, and LLM-powered automations that run inside the personal cloud environment.
Coding with AI
Leverage AI-assisted development workflows natively in your day-to-day engineering work, using agentic coding tools to move faster and maintain quality at a small-team scale.
System, API \& UX Design
Apply strong taste and judgment to system design, API contracts, and user experience decisions. The product must be simple enough for non-technical users while remaining powerful enough for developers — your design sensibility is a core part of the role.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- Generalist engineering background — comfortable owning problems across backend systems, APIs, infrastructure, and frontend/UX
- Proficiency in Python and TypeScript
- Hands-on experience building AI products and coding with AI tools
- Strong taste in system design, API design, and UX design
- Operating experience at early-stage startups — you know how to move fast, make good tradeoffs, and ship in ambiguous environments
Bonus Points
- Former founder — you've built and shipped something from scratch
- Experience building personal productivity tools, developer infrastructure, or consumer cloud products
- Familiarity with self-hosting paradigms, Linux server environments, or personal cloud architectures
- Experience integrating or building on top of LLM providers (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google) and agentic frameworks
What Success Looks Like
Within your first few months, you've shipped meaningful product improvements across at least two layers of the stack — from agent tooling to user-facing experience — and you're operating with the autonomy and ownership of a founding engineer. The product is measurably easier to use, more capable, or more reliable because you're on the team.
