Forensic Biomechanical Engineer – Injury Causation \& Collision Analysis

Location: Orange County, California

Employment Type: Independent Contractor

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Forensic Biomechanical Engineer to join our forensic engineering team and provide biomechanical and injury-causation analysis for the insurance industry and legal profession.

Our practice focuses on determining whether the mechanics of an incident are consistent with the nature, severity, and mechanism of a claimed injury. Cases involve a wide range of real-world events, including motor vehicle collisions, pedestrian incidents, slip-and-fall accidents, workplace injuries, and workers' compensation claims.

The successful candidate will combine engineering principles, biomechanics, human tolerance, medical information, and accident reconstruction evidence to develop technically sound, objective opinions regarding injury mechanisms.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Perform biomechanical analyses of claimed injuries arising from vehicle collisions, slip-and-fall incidents, workplace accidents, and other traumatic events.
  • Evaluate the mechanism of injury and determine whether the forces and motions involved are biomechanically consistent with the claimed injury.
  • Analyze accident reconstruction information, including:
  • Vehicle damage and crush
  • Collision dynamics
  • Delta-V and acceleration
  • Occupant kinematics
  • Direction and magnitude of applied forces
  • Crash pulse characteristics
  • Vehicle and occupant positioning
  • Evaluate the relationship between incident mechanics and claimed injuries, including whether an incident could reasonably produce a particular injury.
  • Review medical records, diagnostic imaging, photographs, accident reports, depositions, police reports, repair records, and other case materials relevant to injury causation.
  • Conduct literature research and apply peer-reviewed biomechanical and medical literature appropriately.
  • Work collaboratively with accident reconstructionists, mechanical engineers, and other forensic experts.
  • Develop technically defensible opinions regarding causation, injury mechanism, and injury consistency.
  • Prepare clear, professional technical reports suitable for use in insurance claims, litigation, depositions, and trial.
  • Communicate technical findings to attorneys, claims professionals, and other non-engineering audiences.
  • Assist attorneys and clients in understanding the engineering and biomechanical significance of accident evidence.
  • Participate in expert depositions, conferences, mediations, and trial testimony when qualified and appropriate.
  • Maintain objective, scientifically supported opinions regardless of the retaining party.

  • Falls involving stairs, curbs, uneven surfaces, and other hazards

Workers' Compensation / Workplace Incidents

  • Lifting and material-handling incidents
  • Falls
  • Strains and sprains
  • Repetitive or cumulative loading
  • Workplace equipment incidents
  • Injury mechanism and force analysis

Other Forensic Injury Matters

  • Pedestrian and bicycle incidents
  • Recreational and premises incidents
  • Product-related injuries
  • Occupational injury claims
  • Analysis of competing mechanisms of injury

QualificationsRequired

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Biomedical Engineering, Biomechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience applying biomechanics and engineering principles to human injury mechanisms.
  • Strong understanding of human anatomy, biomechanics, kinetics, kinematics, and mechanical loading.
  • Ability to interpret and critically evaluate scientific and engineering literature.
  • Excellent technical writing and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple forensic cases.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly.

Preferred

  • Master's or Ph.D. in Biomechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Professional engineering license (P.E.) or demonstrated progress toward licensure.
  • Experience in forensic engineering, accident reconstruction, injury biomechanics, or litigation consulting.
  • Experience analyzing motor vehicle collisions and occupant injury mechanisms.
  • Experience working with attorneys, insurance carriers, claims professionals, or other litigation clients.
  • Prior deposition or courtroom expert-witness experience.
  • Experience performing quantitative biomechanical analyses using engineering calculations, modeling, or computational methods.
