We are one of Pittsburgh’s largest social service organizations operating 15 programs in three counties. Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Responsible for administering benefits for employees. The Benefit Specialist is also responsible for creating benefits in the system, conducting open enrollment, and ensuring staff understand their health, retirement, and leave options. This position works closely with the payroll position to ensure data is accurate. This role must be flexible based on agency needs and be able to prioritize functions.
General Statement Of Duties
- Oversee and act as plan administrator for benefits such as health, retirement, and leaves.
- Advise employees, answer questions and assist staff with enrolling in benefit plans as new hires or during open enrollment.
- Prepares for quarterly 401k committee meetings by working with the recordkeeper and Financial Advisors to ensure materials are accurate and complete.
- Leads the full-cycle process of the annual 401k audit.
- Leads open enrollment and ensures systems are set up properly each year.
- Works with employees and management on managing employee leave of absence.
- File and process worker injury claims.
- Develops ongoing relationships with third-party benefit vendors.
- Works with third-party leave vendor to ensure FMLA, military, STD, LTD claims are handled properly.
- Works with external auditors to review results to better improve the processes and implement changes.
- Reconcile vendor invoices and bills to payroll and submit them for payment in a timely manner.
- Reaches out to benefit vendors with questions or to rectify employee issues.
- Reviews reports and analyzes trends and accuracy. Works with vendors and departments to correct issues immediately.
- Presents accurate and detail-oriented data to leadership.
- Conducts periodic audits of plans and vendors to ensure compliance.
- Provides continuous awareness to employees on benefits, retirement, and resources through outreach.
- Conducts Human Resources new hire training.
- Files reports, applications, and audits required by law to be filed with federal, state and local agencies, such as Internal Revenue Service, Department of Labor, and other regulatory agencies related to benefits.
- Reviews and analyzes changes to federal, state and local laws pertaining to benefits, and reports necessary or suggested changes to management.
- Maintains knowledge of ERISA, 5500s, FMLA, COBRA, HIPAA, Affordable Care Act, and all other statutory regulations pertaining specifically to benefit administration and generally to other federal, state and local employment laws.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience with benefits administration, Human Resources, or a similar role.
- SHRM Certification preferred but not required.
- Proficiency with HRIS systems and Microsoft Office (specifically excel).
- Candidate must have excellent communication skills in English (read, write, and speak).
- Must have or be able to obtain Act 33, 34 and FBI Clearances.

- Ability to perform the essential job functions consistently, safely and successfully with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
- Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state, and local standards.
- Must be able to follow process for crisis and behavior de-escalation techniques as taught by the program.
- Must be able to talk, listen and speak clearly on telephone.
