The D. E. Shaw group seeks an exceptional alternative data analyst to join its Discretionary Tech team. This role collaborates with Fundamental Equities and teams across the firm to evaluate and integrate unique data assets directly into the investment decision making process. This position offers the opportunity to solve complex, open-ended problems in an interdisciplinary setting, combining scientific inquiry with qualitative information to generate differentiated investment perspectives in a collegial, collaborative, and engaging work environment.

What you’ll do day-to-day

Drive differentiated insights by independently pursuing data opportunities aligned with active investment debates.

Develop analytical frameworks and models applied to alternative data to generate actionable insights to support the diligence of investment decisions.

Monitor, analyze, and assess data trends, market developments, and data quality, clearly communicating findings, limitations, and recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Develop deep expertise in applying alternative data to the investment process, partnering directly with fundamental investors while leveraging the firm’s systematic capabilities.

Draw principled conclusions from data, ensure all work adheres to the firm’s legal and compliance framework, and proactively identify and address data integrity and cleanliness challenges.

Work closely with our teams in India, providing technical and analytical guidance and ensuring consistently high-quality output.

Identify thematic industry trends and proactively surface new investment opportunities using a combination of alternative data, industry research, and quantitative analysis.

Partner with the Firmwide Data team as a domain expert on alternative data sourcing initiatives that support data-driven efforts across business units beyond Fundamental Equities.

Collaborate with other groups around the firm, including Credit Opportunities, Macro, Private Credit, and Asset-Backed Securities, as well as our global team of analysts in London, Hong Kong, and Singapore.

Operate with a high degree of autonomy, independently prioritizing projects and driving workstreams from initial hypothesis through investment recommendation.

Who we’re looking for

A bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a technical or quantitative field, a demonstrated record of academic and professional achievement, and two to five years of relevant experience.

Well-developed quantitative, analytical, and problem-solving abilities; keen attention to detail; excellent written and verbal communication skills; and impressive interpersonal skills.

The ability to dive into details, take initiative, collaborate effectively with a global team, and manage and drive complex projects to completion.

Proficiency in data analysis tools and programming languages, specifically Python and SQL, and advanced working knowledge of Excel.

Sound quantitative reasoning skills, disciplined thinking under uncertainty, and the ability to synthesize quantitative evidence with qualitative context.

Experience or exposure to technology or consumer sectors is a plus.

The expected annual base salary for this position is $250,000 to $300,000\. Our compensation and benefits package includes variable compensation in the form of a year-end bonus and benefits including medical and prescription drug coverage, 401(k) contribution matching, wellness reimbursement, family building benefits, and a charitable gift match program.
