Job Description
Job Summary
Application Engineers are responsible for designing, developing and maintaining software applications that meet the needs of the organization. They collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including developers, business analysts, and end-users to ensure applications are optimized for performance, usability and reliability.
Employees serving at this level - Application Engineer IV - are expected to perform as expert professionals, providing technical leadership to others internally and externally in a specific field of expertise. They also may guide less-experienced staff on their technical and professional development.
In this role:
This is the technical lead role for our CRM engineering practice (MS Dynamics 365 / Power Platform). Our CRM platform has grown significantly in scope — now spanning Claims, Warranty, Customer Support, and Parts \& Service — and we're building out internal engineering capacity to match that growth. You will formally set technical direction — architecture, patterns, and standards — and you'll mentor the engineers building inside them. This is the natural next step for a platform that required hands-on engineering acumen to reach the next level of business-readiness.
Primary Responsibilities
Application Software Development: 20%
Develop the most complex existing and new applications by analyzing and identifying areas for modification and improvement. Develop new applications to meet business needs.
In this role:
- Architect and, where needed, personally build the most complex solutions in Dynamics 365, Power Platform, and the surrounding Azure ecosystem.
- Provide expert-level Dataverse plugin development (C#), client-side scripting, and business rule/workflow authoring.
- Leverage the full-stack range (JavaScript/TypeScript, C#/.NET, REST/SOAP APIs, ETL workflows) to build and review integrations across Claims, Warranty, Customer Support, and Parts \& Service.
Application Software Maintenance: 20%
Lead monitoring, identifying, and correcting the most complex software defects to maintain fully functioning applications software.
In this role:
- Serve as the internal standard-bearer for SecOps and IT governance.
- Ensure everything built on the platform, by employees or by our SI vendor, meets company security and compliance standards.
- Own the technical relationship with the SI vendor.
- Review vendor deliverables for quality and standards alignment.
- Identify what should move in-house over time.
Application Software Road Map: 15%
Define and maintain a roadmap to facilitate complex application software development and ensure the development work is prioritized in line with business requirements.
In this role:
- Define how things get built — architecture, design patterns, coding standards, and engineering best practices for the CRM platform.
- Design and own the platform's ALM/DevOps backbone.
- Establish environment strategy, solution packaging and release pipelines, and promotion governance across dev/test/prod.
Testing Performance: 15%
Design and monitor the quality of complex and interrelated website/applications software tests and respond to user emails to monitor, diagnose, and correct performance issues.
In this role:
- Set and enforce the team's quality bar.
- Review designs and code from both engineers and the SI vendor.
- Unblock hard problems.
- Raise the standard for what “done well” looks like across the platform.
Documentation and Backup: 15%
Create and maintain complex technical and/or user documentation to a high standard, and back up files to ensure instant recovery if problems occur.
In this role:
- Document the architecture, patterns, and standards you define, so they outlive any one project.
- Establish foundational technical documentation where none currently exists.
Horizon Scanning: 15%
Identify new external developments and/or emerging issues within an area of technology or business function and evaluate their potential impact on, or usefulness to, the organization.
In this role:
- Track emerging tools, patterns, and platform capabilities in the Dynamics/Power Platform/Azure ecosystem, including AI-assisted development tooling.
- Provide informed recommendations on which technologies are worth adopting based on business value, not novelty.
Job Requirements
- At least 8-10 years of relevant and progressive work experience (Preferred)
Application Development:
- Works at an advanced level to develop software through the use of programming languages.
IT Testing:
- Works at an advanced level to design, execute and report on systems/service tests to ensure that an application functions as specified in the requirements.
Data Collection and Analysis:
- Works at an advanced level to determine and analyze trends from data that is collected to assist in compiling reports that will help in decision-making.
Categorizing and Classifying Information:
- Works at an advanced level to utilize systems and tools to support categorizing and classifying data and information.
Assessment:
- Works at an advanced level to assimilate and understand data and information from various sources in order to draw appropriate conclusions and make relevant recommendations.
In this role, that 8–10 years should include:
- Deep, recent time in the Microsoft Dynamics 365 / Power Platform / Azure ecosystem, with a demonstrated track record of defining architecture and patterns for a team — not just working inside patterns someone else set.
- Expert-level Dataverse solution ALM: managed vs. unmanaged layering, multi-environment strategy, security role design, and release governance at a program (not single-project) level.
- Azure identity/security patterns (App Registrations, managed identity) and Azure DevOps (or equivalent) CI/CD tooling for Power Platform release pipelines.
- Experience mentoring other engineers and reviewing work you didn't personally write, including work from an external vendor or contractor.
- Comfort operating without a technical leader above you — this role is that technical leader for the team.
These will make a candidate stand out:
- Microsoft certifications reflecting depth, not just entry (PL-400, MB-500/600-series, AZ-204/AZ-305, or similar).
- Prior experience standing up architecture or engineering standards from scratch on a team that didn't have them yet.
- Experience specifically overseeing or grading the output of a systems integrator or outsourced delivery team.
- Background across multiple Dynamics lines of business or complex, multi-LOB CRM environments.
What Kind of Person Thrives Here
This role has no technical leader above it — the person in this seat is the ceiling on technical quality for this team. They'll be defining architecture and standards in real time, often while reviewing vendor work and mentoring newer engineers who are still finding their footing. That takes genuine expert-level depth, real comfort setting direction without someone validating it, and the patience to teach what they know.
Someone who's been the person other engineers came to when something was genuinely hard (and liked being that person) is exactly who we're looking for.
What We Support
This role sits within our CRM practice, which runs MS Dynamics 365 across Claims, Warranty, Customer Advocacy, and Service and Quality.
