Job Description

Hazen and Sawyer is seeking a Junior Hydrogeologist based in Los Angeles or Orange County who is excited to launch and grow a career in applied groundwater science. This role offers the opportunity to develop hands on technical expertise in groundwater data analysis, hydrogeologic interpretation, and numerical modeling while contributing to meaningful water resource management and restoration projects across Southern California.

You will work closely with experienced hydrogeologists and engineers on complex, real world challenges ranging from aquifer characterization and monitoring to remediation and groundwater replenishment. You will gain direct project exposure, mentorship, and increasing responsibility as your skills grow. This position is ideal for a motivated early career professional eager to build a strong technical foundation and make a tangible impact on sustainable water solutions.

Why Hazen and Sawyer:

  • Founded in 1951 by the son of Allen Hazen (developer of the Hazen-Williams equation), we are an employee-owned company with a singular focus on "all things water."
  • Our work includes planning, design, and oversight of construction of environmental infrastructure – for water, wastewater, and stormwater management.
  • We foster a work environment low on bureaucracy and high in creativity.
  • We recruit talented professionals, provide them with challenging, interesting, and creative assignments, and furnish them with the tools they need to succeed.
  • We currently have over 2,000 employees in 70\+ offices throughout the United States, Latin America, Canada, and the UK.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Compile, QA/QC, and analyze groundwater, geologic, and water-quality datasets.
  • Assist with hydrogeologic and geochemical interpretations and preparation of figures, maps, and technical memoranda.
  • Contribute to data analysis and visualization efforts (e.g., MS Excel, ArcGIS, Power BI, or similar tools).
  • Support conceptual and numerical model development of groundwater flow and transport models (e.g., MODFLOW, MT3D, or similar).
  • Support field activities including groundwater sampling, aquifer testing, water-level measurements, and borehole logging (as needed).
  • Work collaboratively with staff, supervisors and project managers to support client deliverables and regulatory submittals.
  • Knowledge of subsurface and geotechnical engineering requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • BS or MS in Hydrogeology, Geology, Geological Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or related field
  • Strong interest in data analysis, groundwater modeling, geochemistry, and/or quantitative hydrogeology
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • PE license

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with data analysis and management software; experience with GIS, Python, R, or modeling software is a plus
  • Advanced degree (Master’s or Doctorate) in Civil/Environmental Engineering

What We Offer:

  • Comprehensive health benefits (medical, dental, vision, and prescription plans)
  • Pre-tax flexible spending plans for medical, dependent care, and transportation
  • Short and long-term disability, and employer-paid life insurance
  • Paid holidays, floating holidays, and paid time off (PTO)
  • Employer-contributed 401(k) plan and additional financial planning support
  • Professional growth opportunities, including tuition reimbursement, in-house training, and incentives for professional registration and professional organization memberships
  • Starting pay range for this position depends on skills, experience, education, and geographical location
