Principal/Senior Mechanical Engineer - Charlotte, NC
Position Overview
We are seeking a highly experienced and licensed
Principal Mechanical Engineer (P.E.)
to lead engineering design and execution across a diverse portfolio of industrial and commercial projects. This role is ideal for a technical leader with a strong background in
HVAC, plumbing, or piping systems
, capable of driving complex projects from concept through construction.
The Principal Engineer will serve as a subject matter expert, mentor junior staff, and collaborate closely with project managers, clients, and field teams to ensure high-quality, code-compliant, and efficient system designs.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the
engineering design and review
of mechanical systems, including HVAC, plumbing, and process piping.
- Provide
technical oversight
on large-scale industrial and commercial projects such as pharmaceutical facilities, manufacturing plants, power generation sites, and data centers.
- Serve as
Engineer of Record (EOR)
and ensure all designs meet applicable codes, standards, and client requirements.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including electrical, structural, and construction professionals.
- Review and approve
drawings, specifications, calculations, and submittals
.
- Support
project planning, budgeting, and scheduling
from an engineering perspective.
- Interface with clients to understand requirements and present technical solutions.
- Mentor and develop junior engineers and designers.
- Drive
innovation, efficiency, and best practices
in mechanical system design and execution.
- Participate in site visits, inspections, and commissioning activities as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) license
(required).
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- 10\+ years of experience
in mechanical engineering within HVAC, plumbing, or piping systems.
- Strong experience in
industrial and/or commercial projects
(pharmaceutical, manufacturing, power, or data centers preferred).
- In-depth knowledge of relevant codes and standards (ASHRAE, ASME, IPC, etc.).
- Proven ability to lead complex engineering projects and teams.
- Strong communication and client-facing skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with a
mechanical contractor or design-build environment
.
- Familiarity with BIM/Revit and other design tools.
- Experience in
process piping or mission-critical systems
(e.g., clean rooms, data centers).
- Project management experience is a plus.
