Managing Director, Platform Engineering

A rapidly scaling technology organization is seeking a Head of Platform Engineering to lead and evolve its cloud infrastructure, platform engineering, and reliability engineering capabilities. This role will oversee a large and growing engineering organization responsible for developer enablement, infrastructure automation, observability, cloud-native architecture, and operational scalability.

This position combines executive-level leadership with deep technical ownership. The ideal candidate brings strong experience leading large engineering organizations while remaining highly hands-on with modern cloud-native technologies, platform tooling, and software engineering practices. You will partner directly with executive leadership to define platform strategy, improve engineering velocity, and build scalable systems that support continued growth.

What You’ll Tackle

• Lead and scale Platform Engineering and SRE organizations
• Define long-term cloud infrastructure and platform strategy
• Build product-oriented internal developer platforms
• Drive modernization initiatives across Kubernetes and cloud-native systems
• Improve observability, reliability, automation, and deployment workflows
• Partner with engineering leadership to improve developer experience and software delivery velocity
• Establish scalable operational standards and engineering best practices
• Mentor engineering leaders and help scale organizational structure

What You Bring

• 10\+ years of experience in platform engineering, cloud infrastructure, or SRE
• Strong hands-on experience with Kubernetes and cloud-native ecosystems
• Ability to be hands on and lead a team is a must
• Proven leadership experience managing large-scale engineering organizations
• Experience operating in highly product-centric engineering organizations
• Experience building internal developer platforms or platform-as-a-product organizations
• Experience building platform engineering organizations in high-growth environments
• Experience with AI developer tooling or agentic AI workflows
• Strong software engineering background with Python, Java, Go, etc.
• Experience with Infrastructure-as-Code tools
• Strong observability and monitoring expertise
• Experience leading large engineering organizations and scaling technical teams
• Strong understanding of distributed systems, containers, and infrastructure automation
• Ability to communicate technical strategy across engineering and executive stakeholders
• Experience with OpenStack or VMware
• Exposure to policy-as-code frameworks
