About the job

Job Title:

Backend Engineer, API Platform

Salary:

$140K – $250K \+ 0\.05% – 0\.17% equity

Company Description:

Series A Fintech Infrastructure Startup, $45M raised, NY and Palo Alto

Location:

New York, NY or Palo Alto, CA (hybrid) \| Visa sponsorship available including new H1B

Job Description:

The API is the product. This company is building the rails that the modern mortgage industry runs on, and the GraphQL API you design is what leading fintechs, lenders, and publicly traded banks build directly on top of. This is not internal tooling and it is not a CRUD app. It is a public-facing API that has to model one of the most legally and financially complex domains that exists, cleanly enough that external engineering teams can build on it with confidence. The company has $45M raised, is backed by Peter Thiel, QED Investors, and Citi, and is 40 people rebuilding a $13T industry that still runs on software built decades ago.

Why this role is remarkable:

  • You are not maintaining an internal system. You are designing the API surface that defines how an entire industry interacts with modern infrastructure, with external customers depending on every schema decision you make
  • Backed by Peter Thiel, QED Investors, Citi, and founders of some of the most respected fintech companies of the last decade, with real enterprise traction and publicly traded banks already on the platform
  • 40 people, $45M raised, and a $13T market that is genuinely broken. The upside here is real and the technical problems are legitimately hard

What you will do:

  • Design and own a production-grade GraphQL API in TypeScript and NestJS that external customers build directly on top of, modeling the full complexity of mortgage origination into clean, elegant schema that actually makes sense to work with
  • Work directly with customers and subject matter experts to understand what they need, then translate that into backend features and domain abstractions using event-driven architecture and workflow orchestration tools like Temporal
  • Own your work end-to-end with a product mindset, contributing to technical direction at a company where the engineering decisions you make today become the standard the industry builds on tomorrow

The ideal candidate:

  • 1 or more years of backend engineering experience from a VC-backed startup, a fintech or proptech company, or FAANG, with strong TypeScript skills and hands-on experience designing and shipping production-grade GraphQL APIs
  • Track record of gathering requirements from customers or domain experts and turning them into clean, maintainable backend features, ideally in a regulated or complex domain like fintech, insurance, or logistics
  • Product-oriented, detail-obsessed, and genuinely interested in the hard problem of translating messy real-world complexity into software that other engineers love building on top of
