Trust Doctor in Acute Medicine – 12‑Month Fixed Term (Starting August 2026)

Are you looking to build strong, hands‑on experience in acute care within a friendly, supportive, and fast‑paced environment? Our Acute Medicine team is excited to offer a fantastic 12‑month Trust Doctor post, perfect for someone eager to develop their skills and confidence in managing acutely unwell patients.
At The RUH, Acute Medicine Is At The Heart Of Our Integrated Front Door. You’ll Be Part Of a Dynamic Service That Includes
- 25‑bedded Medical Assessment Unit (MAU)
- A newly refurbished Medical Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit with 13 trolleys and 42 chair spaces
- 18‑bedded Medical Short Stay Ward
You’ll work alongside an experienced and supportive team, with day‑to‑day consultant supervision. The department includes
13 SHOs/F2s and 3 F1s
, forming a well‑structured workforce that manages the acute take Monday–Friday and provides overnight ward cover with support from ward‑based medical teams.
Main duties of the job
How We Work
- Emergency admissions between 8am and 5pm are managed by our Acute Physicians.
- Out‑of‑hours admissions are supported by 24 General Medical Consultants, including Acute Physicians.
- Frail elderly patients receive specialist input from our Frailty Flying Squad, MNPs, and Care of the Elderly Consultants.
- The on‑take Specialist Registrar leads the integrated take, working closely with the Acute Medicine team.

Qualification
Essential criteria
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- ALS
- Training in the initial assessment and care of the acutely ill patient.
Desirable criteria
- Experience in an acute speciality at SHO level (or equivalent outside UK)
- MRCP
Clinical Skills and Technical Skills
Essential criteria
- Knowledge of own limitations
- Evidence of experience in a range of acute medical specialties, with experience of managing patients on unselected medical take during core training or equivalent
- Good general medical knowledge and ability To work at SHO level
- Demonstrates awareness of the basics of managing acute medical conditions, including emergencies, in patients and out patients
- Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
- Able to work without direct supervision where appropriate
- Able to prioritise clinical need
- Able to maximise safety and minimise risk
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of skills in the management of patients not requiring hospital admission
