Summary of Position: The Student Teacher Supervisor serves as a liaison between the School of Education, Michigan partner schools, and teacher candidates during their apprenticeship or internship experience. The supervisor provides instructional coaching, conducts formal observations and evaluations, supports professional growth, and ensures that teacher candidates meet program, state, and accreditation requirements for licensure. The role emphasizes mentoring, reflective practice, and continuous improvement aligned with professional teaching standards.

The School of Education seeks candidates to supervise apprenticeship and internships in Michigan, with current needs in the northwest and southwest regions of the state.

Candidates in other regions are invited to apply (indicate the desired region), in the event that we have needs in their area.

This is a pooled position. Additionally, one or more applicants may be hired to teach classes on a semester-by-semester basis (as needs emerge). Such courses are to be taught in person on one of Ferris State University's Campuses or approved FSU sites. The candidate(s) selected for the position must reside in Michigan after acceptance of employment and will perform duties at a Ferris site.

The anticipated start date of these positions is August 2026 at the earliest and January 2027 at the latest.

Required Education: Master's degree in Education or closely related field.

Required Work Experience: A minimum of 3 years of teaching at the K-12 level.

Additional Education/Experiences to be Considered: - Experience as a cooperating teacher, instructional coach, administrator, or university supervisor.

  • Knowledge of instructional frameworks, assessment practices, and classroom management strategies.
  • Knowledge of the Michigan school system and certification process.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to travel to assigned school sites in various regions in Michigan.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities: Supervision \& Evaluation

  • Conduct scheduled observations of education students in their apprenticeship and internship phases of their programs in assigned PK–12 classroom placements (in-person and/or virtual).
  • Evaluate education interns (student teacher) performance using university-approved observation tools and frameworks (e.g., Danielson Framework, InTASC, state standards).
  • Provide timely, written feedback focused on instructional effectiveness, classroom management, assessment, and professional dispositions.
  • Complete mid-term and final evaluations in accordance with program timelines and policies.

Coaching \& Mentorship

  • Support apprentices and interns in developing instructional planning, delivery, assessment, and reflective practices.
  • Facilitate post-observation conferences that promote self-reflection, goal setting, and professional growth.
  • Identify areas of concern early and collaborate on improvement plans when needed.

Collaboration \& Communication

  • Serve as a liaison among student teachers, cooperating teachers, school administrators, and university faculty.
  • Communicate regularly with cooperating teachers regarding candidate progress, expectations, and concerns.
  • Participate in meetings related to candidate support, remediation, or placement decisions as required.

Program \& Compliance Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate data and documentation of observations, evaluations, and communications.
  • Adhere to university policies, ethical guidelines, and confidentiality expectations.

Professional Engagement

  • Participate in department professional development trainings as provided by the School of Education.
  • Stay current with best practices in teacher education, supervision, and instructional pedagogy.
  • Support the mission, values, and continuous improvement efforts of the School of Education and Ferris State University.

Adjunct Teaching Responsibilities (if applicable)

  • Teach assigned undergraduate education courses (e.g., foundational education courses, curriculum courses, methods courses).
  • Design and deliver engaging, standards-aligned instruction that reflects current research and best practices in education.
  • Develop and evaluate assignments, assessments, and performance tasks that measure student learning and professional competencies.
  • Provide timely feedback and assess student performance using university grading policies.
  • Maintain accurate course records, submit grades, report accreditation data, and comply with academic policies.
  • Provide scheduled availability to support student learning.
  • Cultivates an environment of belonging that values, respects, supports, and celebrates individual similarities and differences, allowing students, faculty, and staff to thrive authentically.
  • Any other duties assigned within the position classification area.
  • Support, promote, and develop university student enrollment and retention initiatives.
  • Faculty members also have professional responsibilities, which may include but are not limited to keeping regularly posted office hours (which are scheduled at times convenient for students) and participation in traditional functions that have academic significance (i.e., reporting initial student participation data and submitting final grades on time). Faculty may be required to teach off-campus or online.
