Job Description

ISS is an innovative and sustainable Portuguese marine biotech startup, dedicated to the discovery, development, production, and commercialisation of sustainable and innovative ingredients derived from seaweeds, tailored to the needs of customers in cosmetics, nutraceuticals, and pet care.

ISS is a spin-off from CIIMAR and is well funded and supported by a lead investor, a sizeable independent VC firm in Portugal with proven experience in successfully propelling Iberian startups into international markets.

Profile summary

The Data Analyst will play a critical role at the intersection of biochemistry and data reliability, supporting ISS's scientific knowledge pipeline.

This role is responsible for identifying, extracting, validating, and standardising biochemical data related to seaweed species from scientific literature, analytical results, intellectual property documentation, and external databases.

The validated data will feed ISS's AI-driven data ingestion workflows and be structured for integration into PostgreSQL databases, ensuring scientific integrity, traceability, and usability across R\&D, Data, and Business teams.

Key Responsibilities

Scientific Data Research \& Extraction

  • Conduct targeted research and data mining of scientific publications, analytical reports, IP documentation, and external databases, primarily using Scopus and related platforms.
  • Identify, select, categorise, and prioritise publications focused on biochemical characterisation of seaweed species and seaweed-derived extracts.

Data Validation \& Quality Assurance

  • Validate extracted biochemical and bioactivity data through reliability, consistency, and accuracy checks.
  • Ensure scientific robustness and traceability of all curated data.

Data Structuring \& Management

  • Sanitize, normalize, and structure datasets for automated ingestion into PostgreSQL-based systems.
  • Maintain clear documentation standards, data governance practices, and version control.

Cross-functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with Data and AI engineers to improve extraction quality and automation workflows.
  • Collaborate with R\&D and Business teams to contextualise biochemical data and support scientific interpretations.

Data Analysis \& Interpretation Support

  • Support the development and comparison of biochemical activity metrics, including IC50 calculations.
  • Link compounds, assays, and bioactivities to enable biological interpretation and support substantiated marketing claims.

Tools \& Technology

  • Literature Databases: Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science
  • Chemical \& Bioinformatics Tools: ChemDraw, PubChem, ChEBI, UniProt
  • AI \& Automation (training provided): LLM-assisted data extraction tools, OCR platforms
  • Analysis \& Visualisation (preferred): Python, R, or similar
  • Laboratory Experience (optional): HPLC, GC/MS, spectrophotometry, or related techniques

Candidate Profile

Education

  • MSc or PhD in Biochemistry, Marine Biology, Chemical Biology, Biotechnology, or related scientific fields (preferred).

Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a similar role involving scientific data analysis, validation, or research.

Technical \& Scientific Skills

  • Strong foundation in bioactive compound analysis, enzymatic assays, and IC50 interpretation.
  • Experience with scientific literature review, data extraction, and quality validation.
  • Ability to translate biological and biochemical insight into structured, high-quality datasets.

Soft Skills \& Work Style

  • High attention to detail and strong analytical mindset.
  • Ability to work autonomously while collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
