Job Summary

The Business Intelligence Analyst will bring experience in data visualization, data analytics, and storytelling to assist the MBTA to use data and performance metrics to drive decision making and to measure the health of its Capital Investment Program (CIP). The Capital Finance and Accounting (CFA) department is responsible for enterprise-wide capital program reporting across projects and departments for presentations to Senior Management and the Board of Directors. The Business Intelligence Analyst conducts deep data analysis using data management, data conversion and data governance, and is responsible for understanding, developing, enhancing, and maintaining the technical components to all the relevant data sources that inform reports and dashboards. This position is in the CFA Department and will work closely with various CFA staff as well as Capital Departments and respective IT stakeholders.

Duties \& Responsibilities

  • Develop complex visualizations using Tableau Desktop for consumption by the respective stakeholder groups dependent on the reporting needs, ensuring data is used correctly to explain narratives and storytelling.
  • Prepare capital reports utilizing several sources including Microsoft Excel spreadsheets and various systems.
  • Implement, execute, and optimize data extraction, cleansing, consolidation, and conversion processes and utilities, including the development of a data governance framework.
  • Analyze data and data models to understand data relationships and how they co-exist in different sources, writing SQL scripts to extract, consolidate and publish data to reports and data to visualization tools, e.g., Microsoft Excel and Tableau.
  • Write advanced SQL scripting to support ad-hoc reporting needs and to extract, consolidate, and publish data for reporting and visualization tools such as Tableau, and develop and maintain data models, databases, data warehouses, and related SQL processes.
  • Support the transition of our legacy Capital Management System (CMS) to a new Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system based in Oracle/Peoplesoft and conversion to Tableau Cloud as well as leveraging AI capabilities.
  • Evaluate potential future reporting solutions and dashboards for the capital program and facilitate and participate in the design and implementation of the solution.
  • Structure data for optimal presentation, access, performance, and integration.
  • Set standards for technical documentation and maintain business intelligence (BI) objects.
  • Perform data profiling to identify and understand anomalies.
  • Work closely with data modelers and developers.
  • Adhere to rules, regulations, collective bargaining agreements (if applicable) and policies of the MBTA including the EEO, anti-discrimination, anti-harassment, and anti-retaliation policies.
  • Perform all other duties and projects that may be assigned.

Supervision

  • No direct reports.

Minimum Requirements \& Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution in computer science, engineering or related field.
  • Two (2) years of experience with development and maintenance of data models, databases, data warehouses, data lakes and/or SQL scripts.
  • Experience with data analysis, data cleansing, data extraction, data conversion, and data governance.
  • Experience with report development, data visualization, and storytelling.
  • Advanced expertise in Tableau Desktop, Tableau Cloud, Tableau Prep Builder, Microsoft Excel,and Microsoft PowerPoint.
  • Analytical and synthesis skills.
  • Flexibility and diplomacy in interpersonal relationships.
  • Organizational skills and ability to multitask (work on several projects at once).
  • Able to operate beyond policies and high-level business processes to define and document supporting standards and procedures.
  • Experience gathering requirements and developing reports that match those requirements.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Implementation experience in agile methodology.

Substitutions Include

  • A High school diploma or GED with an additional seven (7) years of directly related experience substitutes for the bachelor’s degree requirement.
  • An Associate’s Degree from an accredited institution and an additional three (3) years of directly related experience substitutes for the bachelor’s degree requirement.
  • A Master’s Degree in a related subject substitutes for two (2) years of general experience.
  • A nationally recognized certification, or statewide/professional certification in a related field substitutes for one (1) year of experience.

Preferred Experience And Skills

  • Experience with PeopleSoft.
  • Knowledge of government and transit industry.
  • Understanding of project financials: budgets, funding, commitments, and expenditure.

Job Conditions:

  • Ability to effectively read, comprehend, communicate, and respond to instructions, orders, signs, notices, inquiries, etc. in English.
  • Be at least eighteen (18) years of age, except if participating in an approved high school internship / co-op program.
  • Ability to commute to assigned work locations in the Boston, MA metro area, as required by the role.
  • Ability to provide internal and external customers with courteous and professional experiences.

  • Have a satisfactory work record for the two (2) years immediately prior to the closing date of this posting (unless if current student or recent graduate), including overall employment, job performance, discipline, and safety records (infractions and/or offenses occurring after the closing of the posting and before the filling of a vacancy may preclude a candidate from consideration for selection).
  • Ability to pass a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check, comprehensive background screening, and / or medical Clinic screening, potentially including physical examination and drug and alcohol screenings.
  • Ability to work all shifts and / or locations assigned, directed, or necessary for this position, including (for some transit / operations roles) up to twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week as necessary to accommodate severe weather conditions, emergencies, or any other circumstances that may potentially impact service or the safety of service.
  • Intern / co-op staff must be enrolled full or part-time in an accredited educational program and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2\.5 for the entire duration of the internship / co-op. Additionally, interns / co-ops must have valid work authorization and U.S. Social Security Number prior to starting pre-employment screenings / pre-boarding, working in their positions, and throughout the duration of their program.
