Job Description
Remote Staff Software Engineer – Machine Learning (Computer Vision)
About the Company
DeepWalk is a fast-growing technology company that uses computer vision to help cities map and monitor sidewalks. The company works with cities, universities, and engineering firms to provide data-driven insights that support safer and more accessible infrastructure. DeepWalk has processed thousands of miles of sidewalks across more than 20 states, generating millions of labeled data points used in real-world infrastructure decisions. The company has raised $4\.1 million, including a recent $2\.1 million seed round led by Enable Ventures, and currently generates seven-figure revenue.
About the Role
DeepWalk is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead the technical direction of its computer vision platform for automated sidewalk inspection. This role focuses on large-scale imagery, production machine learning systems, and data pipelines capable of handling hundreds of terabytes of visual and geospatial data. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience building and operating computer vision or ML systems in production at scale. You will work closely with experienced engineers, the CEO, and operations teams to establish technical direction, improve platform reliability and scalability, and develop systems that process millions of images and deliver actionable insights to communities. The core technology stack includes Python-based computer vision and machine learning systems running on AWS, supported by data pipelines and services designed for large-scale imagery and geospatial data.
Responsibilities
- Own the lifecycle of computer vision models, including training, evaluation, deployment, and iteration.
- Improve model performance under real-world conditions, including noise, edge cases, and data drift.
- Design and improve data pipelines that process thousands of miles of sidewalks and millions of images.
- Lead architectural decisions for managing hundreds of terabytes of geospatial and visual data.
- Optimize storage architecture, pipeline reliability, and inference performance.
- Establish and improve best practices for deployment, observability, reliability, and scalability.
- Serve as a senior individual contributor and mentor engineers across the team.
- Help raise technical standards and establish scalable engineering patterns.
- Work closely with the CEO and operations team to translate business needs into technical priorities.
- Identify and address scaling, reliability, and maintainability challenges as the platform grows.
First 3–6 Month Priorities
- Develop a strong understanding of DeepWalk’s computer vision systems and data pipelines.
- Identify major scaling, reliability, and maintainability gaps.
- Propose and begin executing improvements to production ML deployment, monitoring, and operations.
- Become a trusted technical partner to company leadership.
Qualifications
- 6\+ years of professional experience, including direct ownership of production ML or computer vision systems.
- Experience taking models from training through production deployment, monitoring, and ongoing iteration.
- Proven experience deploying computer vision or ML systems in real-world production environments.
- Experience owning system architecture and influencing technical decisions across teams.
- Fluency in at least one modern backend programming language such as Python, Java, TypeScript, or Go.
- Strong understanding of system design, scalability, and distributed systems.
- Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure.
- Ability to work effectively in a startup or growth-stage environment with changing requirements.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with large-scale or real-time data pipelines.
- Infrastructure-as-Code experience with tools such as Terraform or CDK.
- Experience with ML observability, data validation, or model deployment.
- Familiarity with geospatial, imagery, or sensor-driven data.
- Interest in urban planning, accessibility, or civic technology.
Pay range and compensation package
The base salary range for this position is $150,000–$190,000 per year, based on scope and experience. The compensation package also includes equity.
Benefits and Perks
- Unlimited paid time off, with most team members taking approximately 3–4 weeks per year.
- Health insurance.
- 401(k) with approximately 4% company matching, including 100% matching on the first 3% and 50% matching on the next 2%.
Work Arrangement
- Fully remote position.
