In this pivotal leadership role, you will bridge corporate strategy with active jobsite labor needs—directing talent acquisition for corporate personnel and craft trades, administering benefits, overseeing employee relations, and ensuring strict adherence to state and federal employment laws. Managing personnel operations for an established general contractor, you will oversee workers' compensation claims, OSHA recordkeeping, employee performance frameworks, and HRIS/payroll integration. If you bring 5 or more years of progressive HR management experience, strong labor compliance knowledge, and a commitment to supporting both field trades and executive teams, Major Contracting provides competitive compensation ($70k–$85k), comprehensive benefits, and a supportive leadership climate.
Key Responsibilities
- Full-Cycle Talent Acquisition: Direct recruitment, candidate sourcing, interviewing, and structured onboarding for project managers, superintendents, field engineers, estimating staff, and skilled trade professionals.
- Employee Relations \& Conflict Resolution: Serve as the primary employee advocate and advisor—resolving workplace conflicts, conducting objective investigations, and guiding supervisors through disciplinary and performance management processes.
- Labor Law \& Regulatory Compliance: Ensure strict organizational compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws, including EEOC, FLSA, FMLA, ADA, DOL regulations, and affirmative action planning guidelines.
- Workers' Compensation \& Safety Coordination: Partner with field safety directors to manage workers' compensation claims, coordinate return-to-work protocols, and maintain accurate OSHA 300 logs and safety documentation.
- Benefits \& Compensation Oversight: Administer health, dental, vision, life insurance, and 401(k) programs; support payroll processing, wage classification reviews, and annual open enrollment campaigns.
- Training, Retention \& Culture: Develop and execute leadership training, craft apprenticeship tracking, employee evaluation cycles, and succession plans to build long-term workforce retention.
- HRIS Administration \& Data Reporting: Maintain accurate personnel records, manage applicant tracking systems (ATS), and utilize enterprise HRIS platforms for workforce headcount reporting, Excel data auditing, and benefits reconciliation.
What You Need To Succeed (Qualifications)
- Required
- Professional HR Tenure: Minimum 5 years of progressive human resources experience, including at least 2 years in an HR Manager, HR Generalist, or HR Business Partner role within construction, manufacturing, trade services, or industrial operations.
- Regulatory \& Labor Law Literacy: Deep functional understanding of employment law, wage and hour regulations, FMLA/ADA administration, and employee relations best practices.
- Technical Systems Competency: Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 (Advanced Excel, Word, Outlook), modern Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), and enterprise HRIS platforms.
- Communication \& Discretion: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills with the demonstrated ability to handle sensitive personnel information with absolute confidentiality.
- On-Site Availability: Full capability to work 100% in person at our corporate headquarters and regional operations facility.
- Preferred
- Industry Scope Alignment: Direct HR experience within commercial general contracting, civil infrastructure, or self-performing trade contractors.
- Enterprise HRIS Familiarity: Hands-on experience with platforms such as Dayforce, Oracle HCM, SAP SuccessFactors, UKG, ADP, or PeopleSoft.
- Professional Certifications: SHRM-CP / SHRM-SCP or HRCI PHR / SPHR credentials.
Compensation \& Benefits
- Competitive Salary Package: $70,000\.00 to $85,000\.00 base annual salary customized directly to human resources management experience.
- Wealth \& Retirement: Corporate 401(k) retirement savings plan featuring a dedicated company matching contribution.
- Health \& Wellness: Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance coverage options.
