Summary

The Junior Plant Scientist supports the development of new products and research requests from SixRing. They will receive guidance from, and execute tasks assigned by the Research Scientist, Microbiology and the Sr. Laboratory Manager to support these activities.

Key Responsibilities:

Carry out routine tasks including planting, transplanting, harvesting, and measurement of plants and seedlings accurately and follow strict methodologies to carry out analyses.

Able to design and execute experimental setups with supervision from senior peers.

Able to take leadership and initiative on experimental designs and execution.

Perform tests to produce reliable and precise data to support scientific investigations.

Operate and maintain greenhouse systems, including irrigation, climate control, and lighting equipment.

Demonstrated problem-solving skills and creativity in experimental design and execution.

Co-design and support research or production trials, including seed germination, growth assessments, and treatment applications.

Ensure that all safety guidelines are followed strictly at all times and maintain a clean and orderly environment.

Assist in the design and execution of experimental setups.

Assist in developing and conducting sampling and analysis.

Perform routine equipment inspections and basic maintenance of greenhouse systems to ensure rigorous experimentation.

Collect, record, and organize data related to plant performance, inputs, and environmental conditions.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Ability to plan and carry out short- and medium-term research projects with supervision.

Knowledge of botany/horticulture techniques and terminology.

Demonstrated ability to conduct and design experiments with supervision.

Demonstrated ability to design of horticulture experiments and apply critical thinking skills.

Time management skills in order to keep ahead of different experiments simultaneously.

Strong computer skills including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook.

Data analysis using R (or alternative software) is considered an asset.

A collaborative individual who excels in a team environment.

Strong attention to detail.

Experience/Education

Diploma or B.Sc. in Biology, horticulture, agriculture, plant science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Basic knowledge of plant biology, soil/substrate management, and crop production practices.

Experience working in a greenhouse, nursery, research facility, or commercial horticultural operation is an asset.

Working Conditions

No travel required for this role.

Ability to lift up to 10 kg.

Ability to work in an office, greenhouse, and laboratory environment.
