JOB SUMMARY
The Chief Information Officer (CIO) is accountable for strategic leadership and oversight of information technology, including networks, infrastructure, research computing and data center. This seasoned professional will advance a robust and secure technology ecosystem that supports internal and customer service delivery as defined by the organization’s mission, enhances internal operations, and delivers exceptional products and services to members.
Reports to: President \& Chief Executive Officer
Annual Salary Range: $175,000 - $250,000
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategy Development
- Develop and implement comprehensive technology architectures and strategies aligned with Nysernet’s goals and objectives.
- Lead technical initiatives to maintain and improve internal operations, as well as work with product owners and membership to enhance member-facing services.
- Advance the organization’s research portfolio by integrating technology and data solutions.
- Champion technical transformation and foster strong, collaborative relationships with internal teams, external partners, and a diverse membership base.
- Contribute to the development of overall organization strategies and initiatives.
Network and Technology Architecture
- Develop and oversee the design, implementation and maintenance of the network and information technology infrastructure, ensuring a secure, scalable, and innovative technology environment that meets product, organizational and membership needs.
- In partnership with Chief Membership Officer (CMO) and other senior leaders to oversee the development and delivery of cutting-edge desired products and services for Nysernet members rapidly.
- Manage IT and network infrastructure, research computing capabilities, and data analytics functions to provide data to drive informed decision-making.
Cross-Functional Collaboration and Communication
- Partner with senior leadership and staff to align IT services with organizational priorities.
- Build strong relationships with members, stakeholders, and partners, understanding and addressing their diverse needs.
- Communicate proactively and effectively across stakeholder groups, fostering trust and transparency.
- Represent the company at conferences, community events and networking functions, fostering positive relationships with community stakeholders and promoting Nysernet’s initiatives.
Leadership
- Identify, lead, mentor and manage the technology staff by defining roles and responsibilities, setting performance expectations, conducting regular assessments, and supporting professional development goals.
- Monitor and evaluate emerging technologies and trends to identify opportunities for organizational growth and improvement.
- Act as a thought leader and source of innovative ideas to position Nysernet as a leader in technology and research services.
- Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, accountability and continuous improvement.
Board Relations
- Communicate with the Boards regarding the organization's information technology, network and research computing strategies and activities.
- Prepare and present reports and participate in meetings with the Boards.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in information technology, computer science, or a related field not required, but preferred.
- 10\+ years proven experience in a leadership role managing information technology.
- Strong strategic planning and execution skills, with a track record of overseeing technology, network, research computing and data functions.
- Familiarity with the unique challenges and opportunities of research networks and higher education not required but preferred.
- Understanding of network, information technology and research computing trends and industry developments.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and negotiation skills.
- Exceptional leadership skills with the ability to inspire and motivate a team.
- Ability to travel occasionally to the Nysernet office, member and prospective member offices and community events throughout NYS and the adjacent states.
- Ability to travel occasionally to conferences and meetings throughout the country.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Remote position with flexible work hours.
- Residency in New York State or region is required for agile travel to meetings throughout the state and region.
- Occasional evening, night and weekend work required.
