About Sunspear Energy
Sunspear Energy is Hawaii's #1 trusted residential and commercial solar leader. As a locally owned and operated, full-service solar EPC, we've installed over 60,000 solar panels and 30\+ megawatts of solar power across Oahu, Maui, and Hawaii Island — for businesses ranging from hospitality and retail to agriculture, education, distribution, and the public sector. We've been named EnergySage Installer of the Year for two consecutive years and recognized on Solar Power World's Top Solar Contractors list.
Our mission is to strengthen our local community by enabling access to clean distributed energy resources, helping our customers achieve financial and energy independence. With in-house design, engineering, installation, and O\&M capabilities, we manage commercial solar and battery storage projects from first conversation to interconnection — and we're growing our commercial team to meet accelerating demand across the islands.
Overview
Sunspear Energy is seeking an experienced Commercial Solar Developer to originate and close solar PV and battery energy storage system (BESS) deals in the Commercial \& Industrial (C\&I) market across Hawaii. This is a high-impact sales role for someone who thrives on building relationships, navigating complex energy economics, and closing deals that make a visible difference on the islands' rooftops, parking lots, and industrial sites.
You'll own the full sales cycle from prospecting and first meeting through proposal, financial structuring, and contract execution while working closely with our in-house design, engineering, and project management teams to deliver projects that close on schedule and perform as promised.
Duties
- Originate new business across target C\&I verticals — hospitality, retail, agriculture, education, distribution/transportation, HOAs, and public sector accounts — through networking, referrals, cold outreach, and market research.
- Manage the full sales cycle, from initial site assessment and energy analysis through proposal development, contract negotiation, and closing.
- Develop customized solar PV and BESS proposals, working with our engineering and design teams to size systems that meet each client's energy goals, load profile, and site constraints.
- Model project economics for prospective clients, including IRR, payback period, and savings analysis, incorporating available incentives such as the Federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC), Hawaii's RETITC, bonus depreciation, and utility programs (e.g., HECO Smart DER, BYOD, TOU rate structures).
- Advise clients on financing structures, including solar loans, PPAs, ESAs, and third-party ownership options, to fit each customer's capital strategy.
- Build and maintain a pipeline in the company CRM, accurately forecasting bookings and providing regular pipeline updates to leadership.
- Represent Sunspear Energy at industry events, trade associations, and community functions to build brand presence and generate leads.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with design, permitting, procurement, and construction teams to ensure a smooth handoff from signed contract to installation.
- Stay current on Hawaii's evolving interconnection rules, utility tariffs, and state/federal incentive programs to keep proposals accurate and competitive
Qualifications
- 3\+ years of experience in commercial solar, energy storage, or C\&I energy sales, business development, or project origination.
- Demonstrated track record of sourcing and closing complex, consultative B2B sales — solar/BESS experience strongly preferred.
- Working knowledge of solar PV and battery storage system fundamentals, financial modeling (IRR, payback, LCOE), and commercial financing structures (PPA, ESA, loan).
- Familiarity with Hawaii's solar market, utility interconnection processes, and incentive landscape (ITC, RETITC, HECO programs) is a strong plus.
- Excellent relationship-building, negotiation, and presentation skills, with the ability to speak credibly to facility managers, CFOs, and business owners alike.
- Self-motivated and comfortable managing a pipeline independently while collaborating with a cross-functional team.
- Proficiency with CRM tools and standard proposal/financial modeling software.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation for site visits and client meetings across Oahu (travel to neighbor islands may be required).
- Bachelor's degree in business, engineering, environmental studies, or a related field preferred, or equivalent professional experience.
Compensation \& Benefits
- Competitive base salary plus commission on closed deals
- Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance.
- 401(k)
- PTO and paid holidays
- Ongoing professional development and industry training
- Opportunity to grow with an award-winning, locally owned company at the forefront of Hawaii's clean energy transition
