Engineer II, Systems is responsible for managing and optimizing the organization's IT infrastructure. This

role involves configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting servers, networks, and storage systems to

ensure high availability and performance. The engineers conduct regular system audits to identify

potential issues and implements proactive measures to mitigate risks. Additionally, they are tasked with

automating routine tasks through scripting and other tools to enhance operational efficiency.

Collaboration with cross-functional teams is essential for successful project deployments, requiring the

specialist to provide technical support during the implementation of new technologies.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Performance Monitoring and Optimization.

Engineer II, Systems is responsible for monitoring

system performance metrics, analyzing data to identify bottlenecks, and implementing solutions to

enhance system efficiency. This includes configuring system settings, conducting regular

performance assessments, and utilizing diagnostic tools to troubleshoot issues. The role also

involves collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure optimal resource allocation and

scalability of systems.

  • Troubleshooting and Issue Resolution.

Engineer II, Systems is responsible for diagnosing and

resolving technical issues related to system performance, network connectivity, and application

functionality. This includes analyzing logs, performing root cause analysis, and implementing

solutions to prevent future occurrences. The role requires collaboration with cross-functional

teams to ensure timely resolution of incidents and adherence to service level agreements (SLAs).

Additionally, the engineer will document troubleshooting steps and resolutions in the knowledge

base for future reference.

  • System upgrades.

Engineer II, Systems is responsible for system upgrades, planning and

execution of upgrade procedures, testing new systems, and documenting changes. This includes

ensuring that compatibility and performance standards are met, as well as troubleshooting any

issues that arise during the upgrade process.

  • Server Maintenance and Upgrades.

Engineer II, Systems is responsible for performing regular

maintenance on servers, including applying updates, patches, and upgrades to ensure optimal

performance and security. This role involves monitoring server health, troubleshooting issues, and

implementing solutions to enhance system reliability. Additionally, the engineer will document

changes made during maintenance activities and collaborate with other IT teams to schedule

downtime effectively.

  • System Configuration Management.

Engineer II, Systems is responsible for managing and

maintaining system configurations across various platforms. This includes deploying, monitoring,

and updating system software and hardware configurations to ensure optimal performance and

security. The role involves creating and maintaining documentation for configuration management

processes, conducting regular audits of system configurations, and implementing changes as

necessary to align with organizational standards.

  • Network Administration Support.

Engineer II, Systems participates in managing and

maintaining network infrastructure. This role involves troubleshooting connectivity issues,

assisting in implementing security protocols, and ensuring optimal performance of network

services. The engineer will also conduct regular audits, and collaborate with other IT teams to

support system integration and upgrades.

  • Documentation of System Processes.

Engineer II, Systems is responsible for creating and

maintaining comprehensive documentation of system processes, configurations, and procedures.

This includes developing detailed guides for system installations, updates, troubleshooting steps,

and best practices to ensure operational efficiency. The engineer will also be tasked with regularly

reviewing and updating documentation to reflect changes in technology or processes.

  • Automation of Routine Tasks.

Engineer II, Systems is responsible for identifying repetitive tasks

within the IT infrastructure and developing automation scripts to streamline these processes. This

includes using tools such as PowerShell, Python, or others to create scripts that manage system

updates, backups, and monitoring alerts. The engineer will also implement automation solutions

in Cloud environments and ensure that all automated tasks are documented and maintained for

future reference.

  • Collaboration with Cross-Functional Teams.

Engineer II, Systems is responsible for

collaborating with cross-functional teams, including developers, project managers, and other IT

staff. This involves participating in meetings to discuss project requirements, providing technical

insights, and ensuring that system architecture aligns with business needs. The engineer will also

work on integrating systems and troubleshooting issues that arise during the collaboration

process.

  • Security Compliance and Management.

Engineer II, Systems is responsible for ensuring that all

systems comply with internal and external security standards. This includes conducting regular

audits, implementing security policies, managing access controls, and responding to security

incidents. The role requires maintaining documentation of compliance activities and collaborating

with other IT teams to enhance system security measures.

Qualifications

Education/Credentials

Education Level: Bachelor’s Degree

Major: Computer Engineering, Computer Science

Degree must be from an accredited college or university.

Job-Related Experience

Customarily has at least the following experience:

5 years

Job-Related Skills/Competencies

  • Customarily has at least 5 years of experience in systems engineering of Microsoft Windows

Server OS.

  • Hands-on experience managing Active Directory including, implementing group policies,

managing sites and services, managing DNS records. Experience with AD FS is a plus.

  • Experience in administering Linux OS.
  • Strong experience in administering Microsoft 365 tenants. That includes advanced experience

managing in Entra ID, Exchange, Intune, Teams, Microsoft 365 Apps.

  • Hands-on experience in managing Hybrid Active Directory and Microsoft Exchange environments.
  • Experience in administering Citrix DaaS. That includes administering Citrix environment, creating

machine catalogs and delivery groups, building vDisks, deploying and managing Storefront

servers.

  • Experience in writing scripts using PowerShell, Python, Bash or other scripting languages.
  • Experience in operating and managing monitoring tools, like Dynatrace, PRTG, SolarWinds or

others.

  • Wintel Server Administration.

Engineer II, Systems must be proficient in installing, configuring,

and administering of Windows Server environments. This includes managing Active Directory,

Group Policy, and DNS services. The role requires troubleshooting server issues, applying

security patches, and ensuring system backups are performed regularly. Additionally, the

engineer will monitor server performance and optimize resources to ensure high availability and

reliability of services.

  • Linux System Administration.

Engineer II, Systems is expected to have working knowledge for

managing and maintaining Linux servers, including installation, configuration, and troubleshooting

of operating systems. This role involves monitoring system performance, applying security

patches, managing user accounts, and ensuring data backups are performed regularly. The

engineer will also automate tasks using shell scripting and collaborate with development teams to

support application deployments.

  • Network Configuration and Management.

Engineer II, Systems is responsible for managing,

and troubleshooting network connectivity for servers, storage units, Cloud compute resources,

etc. This includes implementing security protocols, monitoring network performance, and ensuring

connectivity across various systems. The role also involves documenting network configurations

and changes to maintain an accurate inventory of network resources.

  • Virtualization Technologies (e.g., VMware, Citrix).

Engineer II, Systems must possess

necessary expertise for deploying, configuring, and managing virtualization technologies such as

VMware and Citrix. This includes creating and maintaining virtual machines, optimizing resource

allocation, ensuring high availability, and implementing backup and disaster recovery solutions.

The engineer will also troubleshoot virtualization issues and collaborate with other IT teams to

integrate these technologies into the overall infrastructure.

  • Cloud Services Management (e.g., Microsoft 365, Azure, AWS). Engineer II, Systems must be proficient in administering and optimizing Cloud services, such as Entra ID, OneDrive, Exchange Online, Intune, SharePoint Online, Teams, Dynamics 365, as well as Azure and AWS environments. This includes provisioning resources, configuring Cloud environments, and ensuring system performance and security. This role involves monitoring Cloud infrastructure, implementing automation scripts for deployment, troubleshooting issues, and collaborating with development teams to integrate cloud solutions into applications.
  • Scripting Languages (e.g., PowerShell, Bash, Graph).

Engineer II, Systems is expected to

utilize scripting languages such as PowerShell and Bash to automate system administration

tasks, streamline workflows, and enhance operational efficiency. This includes writing scripts for

system monitoring, configuration management, and deployment processes. The role also involves

troubleshooting existing scripts and modifying them to meet evolving business needs.

  • Backup and Recovery Solutions.

Engineer II, Systems is responsible for implementing,

managing, and optimizing backup and recovery solutions across various systems. This includes

configuring backup schedules, ensuring data integrity, performing regular test restores to validate

backups, and troubleshooting any issues that arise during the backup process. The engineer will

also document procedures and provide training to team members on best practices for data

protection.

  • Security Best Practices and Compliance Standards.

Engineer II, Systems is expected to

follow security best practices across all systems and applications. This includes conducting

regular security assessments, applying patches and updates, configuring firewalls, managing

access controls, and ensuring compliance with industry standards such as ISO 27001 or NIST.

The engineer will also develop and document security policies, monitor system logs for suspicious

activity, and respond to security incidents in a timely manner.

  • Monitoring Tools (e.g., Dynatrace, PRTG). Engineer II, Systems is responsible for implementing, configuring, and maintaining monitoring tools such as Dynatrace and PRTG. This includes setting up alerts for system performance issues, analyzing logs to identify potential problems, and ensuring that all systems are monitored effectively to prevent downtime. The engineer will also be tasked with optimizing the monitoring configurations to align with best practices and organizational needs.

Physical/Mental Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is continuously sitting for extended periods, frequent walking, and occasional standing. May continuously utilize hands and fingers for typing, flex or extend wrist to perform other job-related tasks. The employee is continuously required to use hands and fingers to feel, handle, or operate PC, office equipment and/or other equipment. Due to the nature of this position, an employee can expect heavy computer usage requiring wrist flexion/extension for at least 8 hours per day. Occasional stooping, pushing, pulling, reaching, or overhead reaching, and climbing in the performance of work. The ability to hear and understand with clarity and detect sound, and have conversations with staff, customers, management, etc. Hearing within the acceptable range for telephone and in-person contacts. Normal or corrected vision to acceptable levels for office work. The ability to

lift/carry up to 10 pounds.
