The Position
We are seeking an experienced SQL Database Administrator to support complex Microsoft SQL Server environments across on-premises, Azure and AWS platforms.
You will take ownership of database administration, upgrades, migrations, performance tuning, security, backup and recovery, and high availability and disaster recovery solutions. Working closely with clients and technical teams, you will help design reliable database environments and resolve incidents, problems and project requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Administer Microsoft SQL Server databases across on-premises and cloud environments.
- Install and configure SQL Server Database Engine, SSIS, SSAS and SSRS.
- Manage high availability and disaster recovery technologies, including Always On, log shipping, mirroring and replication.
- Participate in an on-call roster to provide support outside standard business hours when required.
- Deliver SQL Server upgrades, downgrades, patching and migrations using in-place and side-by-side approaches.
- Support migrations from on-premises environments to Azure SQL, Azure Managed Instance, AWS EC2 and AWS RDS.
- Manage database security and encryption, including Transparent Data Encryption.
- Monitor database performance, investigate issues and complete performance tuning.
- Manage database backup, recovery, availability and continuity processes.
- Design and build database environments aligned with business and technical requirements.
- Take ownership of incidents, problems, changes and project deliverables.
- Work closely with clients and technical teams to resolve issues and improve service delivery.
About You
- Extensive experience as a Microsoft SQL Server Database Administrator.
- Strong experience with SQL Server 2005 through to SQL Server 2022 on Windows platforms.
- Demonstrated experience delivering implementations, upgrades, migrations, conversions and consolidation projects.
- Strong knowledge of SQL Server architecture, security, backup, recovery and performance tuning.
- Hands-on experience with SQL Server Always On and other HADR technologies.
- Experience administering databases across on-premises, Azure and AWS environments.
- Proficiency in writing and optimising SQL statements.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and take ownership of technical issues.
- Consulting or client-facing experience with strong stakeholder management skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Relevant Microsoft SQL certification, or willingness to obtain one.
- Familiarity with ITIL practices, or a willingness to work within an ITIL framework.
