The Opportunity

Victorian Clinical Genetics Services (VCGS) is seeking a passionate and detail-oriented Medical Scientist to join our Biochemical Genetics team. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to Victoria's state-wide Newborn Screening and Metabolic Services, delivering timely and accurate testing that directly impacts the health and wellbeing of thousands of babies each year.

The laboratory operates across a six-day roster (Monday to Saturday). The successful candidate will participate in day shifts, rostered overtime, on-call arrangements and Saturday shifts once fully trained.

What You’ll Do

  • Perform routine newborn screening and metabolic laboratory testing
  • Receive, prepare and analyse clinical samples within defined turnaround times
  • Operate, maintain and troubleshoot specialised laboratory instrumentation
  • Support quality assurance activities, including IQC and EQA programs
  • Contribute to method validation, troubleshooting and process improvement initiatives

What You’ll Bring

  • A Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Applied Science and/or Honours, ideally with a major in Biochemistry, or an equivalent qualification recognised for professional membership of HGSA/AACB
  • Practical experience in clinical mass spectrometry within a diagnostic or research setting
  • Experience participating in internal quality control (IQC) and/or external quality assurance (EQA) activities
  • Working knowledge of Excel and data analysis tools, with exposure to programming languages such as Python or R
  • A strong interest in Biochemical Genetics, Newborn Screening and paediatric diagnostics
