Position Summary
====================
Team Penske is seeking a Data \& Systems Engineer to join our IndyCar engineering group, with responsibility for electronic, communications, and data acquisition systems across the race car and engineering operation. The role combines hands-on operation and maintenance with systems integration and continuous improvement.
The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting on-track performance through the development and reliability of vehicle electronics, sensors, telemetry, data systems, and engineering tools. Working closely with race engineers, performance engineers, mechanics, IT, and external suppliers, this individual will contribute to race operations, testing, development programs, and long-term technology initiatives.
This is a hands-on engineering position that combines electrical systems, data acquisition, diagnostics, software tools, and vehicle performance support.
Primary Responsibilities
============================
Data, Vehicle Systems, and Electronics
------------------------------------------
- Develop, maintain, and support all vehicle data acquisition, telemetry, and engineering systems to ensure accurate, reliable, and actionable performance data throughout race and test operations.
- Support vehicle preparation, sensor calibration, and systems validation throughout assembly \& operation
- Specify, evaluate, and integrate sensors, electronic hardware, data systems, and related technologies in collaboration with suppliers and technical partners.
- Develop engineering hardware and software tools including test equipment, fixtures, harnesses, analysis utilities, reporting systems, and automated workflows that improve engineering efficiency, system reliability, and data accessibility.
- Design and maintain electrical schematics, wiring standards, communication architectures, validation processes, and engineering documentation.
- Participate in engineering meetings, assembly meetings, technical reviews, and long-term technology planning.
Race \& Test Support
------------------------
- Support race and test operations as a member of the traveling engineering group.
- Monitor vehicle systems and diagnose issues during race weekends, tests, simulator sessions, and development activities.
- Analyze system health, communications, and data quality throughout all engineering sessions to identify reliability and data-quality issues.
- Partner with IT to manage, maintain, and continuously improve trackside technology infrastructure, including timing stands, telemetry systems, radio communications, networking hardware, and engineering workstations.
- Conduct field repairs for any vehicle and support equipment electronics and wiring
- Support fuel strategy calculations and race operations through accurate collection and analysis of performance data.
- Contribute to development testing, wind tunnel testing, simulator activities, and special engineering projects.
Development Projects
------------------------
- Lead assigned engineering projects from concept through implementation.
- Document testing methodologies, calibration procedures, and engineering standards.
- Work collaboratively across vehicle performance, simulation, software, and systems engineering disciplines.
- Continuously identify opportunities to improve vehicle reliability, data quality, operational efficiency, and engineering workflows.
Required Qualifications
===========================
- Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Strong understanding of electrical systems, sensors, data acquisition, vehicle electronics, and communication networks.
- Experience troubleshooting complex systems using a structured, analytical engineering approach.
- Experience working with engineering data and interpreting vehicle and system performance.
- Understanding of CAN networks, communications protocols, and electronic diagnostics.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced engineering environment.
- Ability to travel and support race and testing operations.
Preferred Qualifications
============================
- Experience in professional motorsports (IndyCar, NASCAR, IMSA, Formula One, Formula E, WEC, or equivalent).
- Experience with Cosworth, MoTeC, McLaren, Bosch, or similar motorsport electronics and data systems.
- Practical experience with CAN communication, including CANalyzer, CANoe, or related tools.
- Proficiency with MATLAB, Simulink, Python, LabVIEW, or similar engineering software.
- Experience developing engineering software tools, automation scripts, or data analysis workflows.
- Familiarity with databases, Power BI, engineering dashboards, or data reporting systems.
- Experience with telemetry systems, radio communications, and trackside networking.
- Experience designing circuit boards, test fixtures, and embedded electronic devices.
- Experience with Arduino, Raspberry Pi, microcontrollers, or rapid prototyping platforms.
- CAD experience including Siemens NX, CATIA, SolidWorks, or similar platforms.
- Motorsport wiring and motorsport electrical assembly experience.
