# Senior Data Engineer

## About the Role

Velir is seeking a Senior Data Engineer to help client organizations effectively manage, integrate, and leverage complex data environments. As a senior individual contributor, you will lead and oversee significant data engineering projects, bridge technical gaps, and recommend and implement data engineering tools and technologies aligned with client needs.

You will work across teams to translate technical context, support complex engineering initiatives, and mentor data solutions and engineering professionals. The role covers data architecture, data warehousing, data quality, scalable data infrastructure, performance optimization, data security, data movement, data modeling and transformation, and MLOps. Velir is a remote-first company serving primarily U.S.-based clients.

## Key Responsibilities

* Lead and oversee complex data engineering projects and data solutions engagements.

* Bridge technical gaps and make effective engineering decisions in ambiguous or uncertain situations.

* Collaborate across teams and translate technical concepts for less technical colleagues.

* Support alignment across Data Team functions and the broader organization.

* Ensure large and complex engineering projects are delivered in alignment with business outcomes.

* Mentor data solutions team members, data engineering managers, and other data engineers.

* Embed with client teams when needed to unblock projects and upskill team members.

* Design and implement real-time and/or micro-batch data processing solutions for high-volume, low-latency requirements.

* Optimize data pipelines for timely data processing and delivery.

* Provide advanced data warehousing techniques and strategies for complex scenarios.

* Design, build, and maintain data infrastructure integrating multiple disparate data sources.

* Model and transform extremely large and complex datasets in a performant and cost-efficient manner.

* Recommend and implement appropriate data engineering tools and technologies.

* Deploy trained machine learning models into production environments for offline or online scoring.

* Define, explain, and communicate long-term technical architecture and engineering approaches.

## Required Qualifications

* Proven experience as a Data Engineer or in a related role focused on designing and developing data pipelines.

* Strong programming skills in Python and SQL.

* Deep knowledge of data warehousing and ETL/ELT processes.

* Intermediate to expert proficiency with data integration and orchestration platforms such as Fivetran, Azure Data Factory, or Apache Airflow.

* Deep experience with at least one cloud data warehouse, such as Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks, or similar.

* Strong experience with at least one cloud platform, such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.

* Experience mentoring and advising other engineers.

* Ability to define, explain, and sell long-term technical architecture and technical approaches or procedures.

* Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

* Professional proficiency in English, both verbal and written.

## Preferred Qualifications

* Experience with Scala or Rust.

* Experience with streaming technologies such as Spark Streaming, Kafka, or Flink.

* Familiarity with MLOps techniques and platforms.

## Work Arrangement \& Schedule

* Work Arrangement: Remote-first.

* The role supports primarily U.S.-based clients.

* Frequent sitting at a desk and performing work on a computer is required.

## Compensation \& Benefits

* Compensation: $145,000–$160,000 annually.

* Compensation is finalized after the interview process.

* Base pay follows a competency-based approach and reflects demonstrated competencies and skills.
