Job Description
Director of Software Engineering
Location: On-site, New York, NY
Salary: Up to $400,000 \+ Equity
Industry: Healthcare / AI / E-commerce Platforms
Who You'll Join:
A Series A healthcare technology startup backed by $26M in funding, redefining how Americans access and pay for medical care. The company is building true e-commerce experiences for healthcare: transparent prices, predictable costs, and the ability to shop for care the same way you shop for anything else online
With around 30 people based in Downtown Manhattan, this is an engineering-first company founded entirely by technical experts. The team believes clarity, ownership, and velocity drive innovation and that technology is the fastest path to fixing one of the most broken consumer experiences in the US.
Revenue is doubling quarter over quarter. The company is scaling fast across medical practices nationwide and this is one of the most important hires they will make.
What You'll Do:
You will lead the Platform team, a group of 7 engineers, reporting directly to the CTO. This is not a people-management-only role. The CTO is looking for a technologist first: someone who wants to lead a small, high-performing team while staying close to the architecture, the code review, and the technical decisions that matter day to day.
The split is roughly 70% technical leadership and 30% hands-on IC work. Leadership here means architecture decisions, PR review, edge case hunting, and working directly with product and ops. Not headcount planning or stakeholder presentations.
- Own the technical direction of the platform across Skylight (EHR front desk tool), Storefronts, Consumer Accounts, and Integrations.
- Drive hands-on work that force-multiplies the team's effectiveness: internal tooling, automation, AI frameworks, and architectural improvements.
- Define and uphold engineering standards across the full development lifecycle through both expectation and example.
- Partner with the VP of Product to translate complex user and operational challenges into clear technical strategies and execution plans.
- Identify and address technical risks before they surface, keeping the team unblocked and moving fast.
- Mentor engineers and build a culture grounded in ownership, rigor, and technical excellence.
Who You Are:
- 7 to 12 years of experience in full-stack engineering and hands-on technical leadership, with time spent at early-stage or scaling startups.
- A technologist first. You want to stay close to the code, lead through example, and care more about what gets shipped than how many people report to you.
- Proven experience leading small IC teams with real product impact: consumer-facing systems, live products, end users who depend on what you build.
- You have done the 1 to 10 journey before, or have been an early technical leader at a high-growth company where the foundations were actively being set.
- Strong full-stack range across the entire platform, from application layer to infrastructure. Not siloed in one area.
- Proficient in TypeScript and comfortable with modern infrastructure including AWS and containerization.
- Fluent with AI tooling and actively use it in your day-to-day workflow.
- Excellent communicator who can debate ideas and challenge assumptions across engineers, product, ops, and the C-suite.
- Bonus: experience in healthtech, fintech, payments, e-commerce, or other regulated, high-complexity domains.
Why You'll Thrive:
- This is a driver's seat role. You will shape the architectural patterns and engineering standards that carry this company from dozens to hundreds of practices.
- Direct access to the CTO and founding team. No layers, no bureaucracy, no waiting for sign-off.
- Revenue is doubling QoQ and everything is up for grabs. The impact of good technical decisions is felt immediately.
- Engineering-first culture built by engineers who value clarity, quality, and execution speed above everything else.
- You will work on technology that genuinely changes how people experience healthcare, an industry that affects every single person in the US.
This role is open to US citizens and Green Card holders only.
